GORE BOROUGH

MEETING OF COUNCIL. (From Our Correspondent.) Last evening’s meeting of the Gore Borough Council was attended by the Mayor (Mr D. L. Poppelwell), Councillors T. Sim, J. Brownlie, W. D. Shelton, A. T. Newman, J. Reid, W. McKinna, D. Lyttle, J. A. Baldey, W. Tutty, W. K. Hamilton and A. Davidson. CORRESPONDENCE. O. H. Dillon, Otama, applied for a refund of 15/- in respect of a drainage permit for a section in Irvine street, West Gore. — Granted.

The District Telegraph Engineer, in reply to a letter from the borough, wrote stating that while the department agreed that petrol tanks were the most suitable means of storage for petrol, it maintained that such tanks should be installed on private property.—Received.

A letter was received from the Chief Electrical Engineer of the Public Works Department requesting the borough to advise him of the position in regard to the borough’s electric lines.—Received.

Mr R. B. Hammond, Director of Town Planning, advised that he would be in Invercargill from April 4 to April 7 in connection with town-planning matters. Should the Council desire, he would be pleased to meet its members along with representatives of the Bluff, Mataura and Winton Borough Councils, on the morning of April 6. Decided to request the director to meet representatives of the Council at Gore before returning north.

A circular letter was received from the Hon. W. Downie Stewart, Minister of Finance, advising that the Local Government . Loans Act would come into force as from April 1. Under the provisions of the Act every local authority which proposed to borrow moneys (otherwise than in anticipation of its revenue) must apply to the board for sanction to borrow—Received.

Walter Christie applied for permission to erect a second petrol pump in front of his shop in Main street. —Granted. David Kay, Mataura, applied for a reduction in the charge of £3 for a traction license fee on the ground that he seldom used his traction engine on the streets within the Gore Borough. —Applicant to be advised that the Council had no authority to reduce the license fee.

George Russell applied for a reduction on the amount charged for as water rates in respect of the livery stables in Main street. The charge of £lO for two years’ rates was, he considered, excessive, as he used very little water. —Referred to the Lighting Committee. A letter was received from the Gore Returned Soldiers’ Association inviting the Mayor and Councillors to be present at its Anzac Day service.—Accepted. A number of electric light applications were referred to the Southland Electric Power Board. The Gore R.S.A. applied for permission to conduct a stall and to sell poppies in Gore on Saturday, April 23.—Granted. T. Ambrose, Lyne street, wrote requesting the Council to drain sections leased by him from the borough.—Referred to the Works Committee. FINANCE COMMITTEE. The report of the Finance Committee was as follows— Regarding accounts for payment, recommend that accounts amounting to £4,789 13/- be passed for payment. Regarding accounts written off—Electric light installations £6 17/4, e.l. installations, wrongly charged £66 12/6, e.l. consumers, as per list £36 9/5, sanitary charges, 1925-26 £24 7/3, 1926-27 £8 6/-. Transfers in balance-sheet 31-3-1926 to General Account for 1927—Abattoirs to General Account £lOOO, water supply to General Account £l5O, electric light to General Account £5OOO. Transfers proportion office expenses— Abattoirs to General Account £4O, water supply to General Account £65, electric light account to general £315; total, £420. Regarding letter from abattoir manager, recommend that this matter be handed over to the Works Committee for report. Regarding hall for Fire Brigade in connection with demonstration, recommend that as same was for the local fire brigade no charge be made for use of hall for social to visiting firemen. LIGHTING COMMITTEE. The Lighting Committee reported as follows— Regarding deed of agreement with Southland Electric Power Board, the Borough Solicitor having reported deed signed by the Southland Electric Power Board in terms of the draft submitted to the Council, and the Committee having been authorised by the Council to sign same, the seal of the Council was attached to the deed and signed by the Mayor, Councillors Sim and Hamilton and the Town Clerk. Regarding application Martin, Milton street, recommend that Committee having signed deed that this application be forwarded to the Southland Electric Power Board for their approval.
