LUMSDEN NOTES

FOOTBALL. (From Our Correspondent.) The football season opened on Saturday when the local club played a friendly match with “Blues.” The recreation grounds were in good order an enjoyable game resulted. There was a good attendance of the public, a large number taking advantage of the fine weather and spending the afternoon on the grounds. Lumsden were victorious by 11 points to 8. For the home side, Earl, Reidy and Crawford scored tries, one of which was converted by G. Tomlin. For the visitors Kerse scored a try which was converted by C. Mills, who also kicked a penalty goal for his side. The Invercargill team included a number of junior players, and the home side was unable to field its strongest team owing to a number of players being engaged in harvesting operations. For the first match of the season a good display of football was given, and it was an interesting game from the spectators’ point of view. A number of minor injuries were received by players owing no doubt to the hard nature of the ground. An Invercargill player, Mr Duff, was unfortunate in having his collar bone broken and had to receive medical attention.

The match was played in the most friendly spirit and was ably conducted by Mr James Allen. The visitors were entertained by the local club at dinner and afterwards an enjoyable smoke concert was held. Members of the Blues’ team congratulated the Lumsden club on possessing such a fine ground and pavilion and made mention of the improved conditions to those obtaining last year. Mr T. Small, president of the local club, presided at the smoke concert, and a number of musical items were given. It is intended to play a return match at Invercargill on Saturday when it is hoped that both clubs will be able to field their strongest teams.

HOCKEY. The opening of the hockey season in Lumsden took place on Saturday. An effort was made to arrange a match with the Dipton Club, but it was not convenient for that team to play on Saturday and a practice match was held. A good number of players were present and prospects are bright for a successful season, Mr W. Hunter, who has kindly consented to act as coach, was in attendance, and assisted at. the practice. Afternoon tea was served by the members and the season was formally declared open by the club’s president, Mr A. Heath.

HARVESTING NEARING COMPLETION. Farmers have been taking advantage of the fine spell of weather and all the available labour has been employed in harvest ing. Given a few more days such as are being experienced, the harvest except in a few instances will be completed. During the past few days numerous stacks have made their appearance throughout the district.
