MUTTON BIRDING

TITI ISLANDS. A meeting was held in the Land Board room on Monday, February 28, 1927. About seventy Natives were present, and the Commissioner (Mr N. C. Kensington) presided. Permits to take mutton-birds from Crown islands were granted as follows— Stage Island—Mr and Mrs George Spencer and family; Mr and Mrs Kitson and family; Mrs Rose Taylor of Tuatapere; Thomas Slark Taylor of Tuatapere; Mrs Hunter of Riverton. Putahinu Island—Mrs Shannon and family, of Bluff. Motunui Island—John Edwards; Edward Edwards; Mrs Joss of Bluff. Betsy Island —Mr Joseph Joss, of Woodend, and family. Pukeweka Island —Francis Arthur Leader, of Riverton. Kundy Island—Mr and Mrs Morrison and family of Bluff. Pukeokaoka Island—Mr Charles Goomes of Bluff; Mrs Goomes of Bluff; Miss Kitty Goomes of Bluff. Small Craft Retreat—George Cross of Bluff. In each case the first-named was appointed supervisor over the particular island. Supervisors for the beneficiallyowned islands were appointed as follows — Poutama Island, Mr James Wixon; Pohowaitai Island, Mr Rita; Mokinui Island, Mrs Potiki; Mokiti Island, Mr Tom West; Solomon Island, Mr William Leader; Kaimohu Island, Mrs A. McQuarrie; Te Pukeotakohe Island, William Fisher; Horomamae Island, W. Spencer; Wharepuaitaha Island, James Fife; Waihuka Island, Mrs Anglem; Tia Island, John Bragg. A general discussion took place regarding proposed new regulations concerning the buildings used and the methods adopted in preparing the birds for the markets. Most of the Natives agreed that it was in their own interests that the new regulation should be given effect to. The assembled Natives seemed very satisfied with the results of the meeting, and several points were cleared up by the Commissioner. The Natives leave for the islands by the s.s. Kotare about March 15.
