MOTOR ASSOCIATION

MONTHLY MEETING. ROUTINE BUSINESS DEALT WITH. The monthly meeting of the Southland Motor Association was held in the Board room yesterday evening. Present: Dr. Stanley Brown (in the chair), Messrs T. F. Macdonald, S. F. Crane, E. A. Nichol, J. von Tunzleman, A. E. Smith, W. F. Sutton, A. Derbie, C. Campbell, J. R. Haigh, G. Cruickshank, A. E. Lea, F. G. O’Beirne and H. A. Dunnage (organiser). CORRESPONDENCE. The Town Clerk, Mr F. Burwell, advised that the question of marking a safety zone for waiting tram passengers at the terminus opposite the Post Oftiie was under consideration. —Received. The South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce through the Automobile Association, forwarded 100 booklets on South C nterbury for distribution to members. —Received, donors to be thanked. The hon. secretory of the Southland Cricket Association, Mr Peter Gilfedder, wrote asking for the co-operation of members in the entertainment of the Melbourne cricketers during their stay in Invercargill. —Left to Mr R. 11. J. Canim. Mr W. I. Hessell, District Traffic Manager, wrote as follows: It has been decided that private cars may be parked in railway station yards at country stations when the owners drive to the railway and proceed by train to distant stations. Where railway officers are stationed, reasonable supervision will be given to the parked cars, but the Department will not undertake any responsibility for damage to or any loss from the cars.—Received. Mr C. R. Mazengarde, Tuatapere, chairman pro tem of the Domain Board, advised that there was a good camping site at Tuat-apere, surrounded by native bush, and bounded by the Waiau river. Fireplaces and conveniences were being built and good fishing was available in the vicinity. Charges were not yet fixed, but the Domain Board would receive donations to speed on improvements. For any information motorists could call on Mr Walker, whose house was opposite the domain entrance and who was a member of the board.—Received, Domain Board to be congratulated on the steps taken. Mr Macdonald brought up the question of rescinding the motion passed by the association at the previous meeting in regard to the Oreti Beach road, and moved “that in view of the Southland County Council spending £5O to the association’s £5O, the matter of the improvement of the road be left in the hands of the county engineer and the member for the riding.” Mr Macdonald explained that expert advice had been received from the county engineer and he considered that the matter should be left in his hands. The motion was carried. Fifteen new members were elected, and four resignations were received. The secret ary reported that there was a credit balance in hand, outside investments, of £23 19/6.
