VALEDICTORY

FAREWELL SOCIAL AT BROWNS. / (From Our Correspondent.) On the evening of Friday, February 25, a large and representative gathering of neighbours and friends met at the residence of Mr. and Mrs John Henderson, Browns, to bid them farewell. Mr and Mrs Henderson and family have been farming in this district for nine years, and the large gathering present indicated the esteem in which they have always been held. Dancing took place in the commodious barn, which was electrically lit for the occasion, whilst the older people enjoyed a game of cards. Several much appreciated items were given throughout the evening, comprising a song by Mrs Grace (Wellington) a humorous duet by Mr and Mrs Grace (Wellington), and Pipe Selections by Pipers Watson and Stuart. After an enjoyable supper had been dispensed by the ladies, Mr. James McIllwrick, on behalf of neighbours and friends, presented Mr and Mrs Henderson with a barometer, and referred to the excellent qualities of their departing guests, and whilst expresing regret at their leaving the district, wished them every happiness and success in the future. Mr. Lance Dalyiell with a few well chosen words then handed a camera to Miss Mary Henderson, and a fountain pen to Mr. Dougald Henderson. Mr. Thompson, Mr. McCallum, (Browns), Mr. J. R. Hamilton, M.P., (Winton) and Mr Mcßae (Hokonui) heartily endorsed the previous speakers’ remarks. Mr. Henderson, on rising to reply, was given a great ovation. He thanked his neighbours and friends for the way in which they had honoured him, his wife, and family that evening and extended a hearty invitation to one and all to visit them in their new home. Music for the dance was supplied by Messrs A. Birss and J. Patton (accordeons) D. Birss (banjo), J. McMaster (violin) and Mr. M. Watson (bagpipes). The floor was in charge of Messrs Smith and Davidson, and they ably carried out their duties. The singing of Auld Lang Syne concluded a pleasant evening.
