FORGERY ALLEGED
RAILWAY CLERKS CHARGED. (Per United Press Association.) Christchurch, February 25. Two railway clerks, John Jajnes Nelson, aged 29, and Gavin Gordon Watson, aged 27, were charged to-day with forgery of pay sheets and were remanded till March 8. The police said the amount involved was in the vicinity of £5OOO and was beyond hope of restitution. Bail was allowed. TOURIST BUSINESS ON UPWARD GRADE. cOURCE OF SOLID REVENUE. That the tourist business for the present year would as far as could be seen at rhe moment be a great improvement on the last season was the opinion ventured by the Minister in charge of Tourist Resorts' (the Hon. W. Nosworthy). The Minister informed a Dominion reporter that up to December 31 (he understood from the Statistical Department) the figures showed an increase of 30 per cent, in numbers over the previous year. Actual cash bookings at the Department’s bureau showed an advance of 10 per cent. The general revenue of the Department from all sources also showed an upward tendency. There had been a great number of American and Australian visitors, and the various bureaux had been heavily taxed. HEARTENING FACTS. “These facts,” said the Minister, “are very heartening when it is considered that last season was a record one in the Department’s annals, probably on account of the Dunedin Exhibition, and showed that the advertising of the department’s attractions was bearing good fruit. The necessity for increased accommodation at all resorts is becoming very evident. The Tourist Department has led the way in largely increa. ng and bringing up to date its house at Lake Waikaremoana and the hotel at Te Anau. Tenders have also been called and an offer accepted for the additions to Waitomo. Taking it all round, the tourist traffic is undoubtedly on the upward grade, and a solid revenue to the country can be confidently anticipated from this source.”
