STATUS OF INDIANS
THE SOUTH AFRICAN CONFERENCE
TERMS OF AGREEMENT.
Capetown, February 21
The terms of th? agreement reached at the conference on th? Indian question are published. The Government has abandoned the proposal for Asiatic legislation, which included segregation, but the existing voluntary repatriation scheme was extended. The bonus to Indians returning to India was increased to £2O, with 10/- for each child under sixteen, the bonus payable in India, and a free passage to the |»ort of embarkation, also from the port of landing in India.
Hitherto the scheme has been ignored by the Indian Government, but th? agreement provides for co-operation with the Union Government to the fullest extent to make it a success.
The agreement is regarded as a diplomatic score for the Indian delegates, since the status of Indians is unaltered, and while they obtained no addition to the existing privileges there is no curtailment of the existing rights as proposed in the Bill which was introduced last session.—A. and N.Z.
