WOMEN’S STOCKINGS

SPARE TO EACH PAIR. AN ECONOMY IDEA. London, February 21. The cables announce a sudden craze of selling women’s stockings in threes, instead of in pairs, on the principle of the spare motor car tyre. The idea has caught on in London, where the leading stores are testing the public demand. The idea is that out of every pair one usually and quickly becomes useless, owing to laddering; therefore, three stockings give double the wear of a pair. Women consider that it is necessary to include the third stocking in the wash; otherwise there would be a noticeable difference of colour. Wholesalers deprecate the idea, emphasising the consideration of expense if it is necessary to repack stock ings in threes instead of twos.—A. and N.Z.
