It will be very interesting to see how Battle Flag shapes at Gore races.

P. T. Hogan will strip Cynelli (Cynic— Trebelli), 3yrs, at Gore meeting.

A field of very promising gallopers will start in the Gore Maiden race.

The Wairio J.C. meeting double winner, Soldier’s Hope, will race at Gore meeting.

The Gore Racing Club’s handicapper has not been hard on Blue Dragoon.

Vitalis has been encouraged to get some trotting money at the Gore R.C. meeting.

Bricklayer paced well at the recent Forbury Park Trotting Club Summer fixture.

Mungamoe is a horse who may take honours at the jumping game unexpectedly.

Winton Trotting Club has voted £3O toward the cost of improving the Winton racing track.

listening Post has not been up very long and a ten-furlong task will try him out soreiy.

Solrose will probably carry heavy' invest mente if produced at the Gore R.C.’s meeting.

It is reported that two-year-old Arrowy m to be let up until he ranks as a three-year-old.

The Southland mentor, J. Thistle ton, may produce Sash am and Pleasant Rose at the Gore R.C. meeting.

The Tapanui pacing winner, Storm Bell, will be seen in action aftain at the Gore R.C.’s fixture this week.

The Victorian Racing Club’s Autumn meeting will open at Flemington on Saturday next and continue on Tuesday.

Wyndham-owned Royal Sun, by Sungod —Ladymaid, trained by E. Todd, is a wellbred four-year-old novice gelding.

Imperial Logan (Logan Pointer—lmperial Princess ) is a four-year-old pacer who maybe heard from at the Gore meeting or later.

Wellington owner-trainer, D. McCauley, has purchased the jumper, Birkenella, and will get him ready for the winter racing season.

Steeplechaser Frenchman, looking fresh and robust, is now an active worker with F. J. McKay’s growing string on the local tracks.

Bonhomme, who is now a stablemate to First Acre, may be a hard horse to beat in immediate engagements under trainer A. D. Webster.

The sum of £832 will be distributed in stakes at the Otautau Racing Club’s Annual meeting on Wednesday, March 30—Otautau Cup £175.

A Melbourne cable message advises that Manfred has been scratched for all engagements at the V.R.C. Autumn meeting, probably on account of a slightly cut leg.

Aard has been slow to come to hand this season, but he may race well in opposition to Storm Bell, Lady Zita and Imperial Logan in the Electric Trot at Gore.

Mr V. Riddiford, of Wellington, has disposed of Climax (Solferino —Nada), to a West Australian owner, and Spode (Tea Tray—Exclusive) to a patron of A. E. Wormaid’s Riccarton stable.

Taranaki trainer O. Cox has sent Lady Desmond to Nelson in charge of J. Dombroski to fulfil engagements at the Nelson J.C. Annual fixture, which extends over today, Thursday and Saturday.

King’s Folly, who proved an easy- winner at the recent Wanganui meeting, is declared to be a galloper of more than average promise. He is a full brother to Anomaly, whose foals are already well spoken of in Otago.

The three-year-old filly Value, who won the Waimangu Handicap (five furlongs) at the recent Rotorua R.C. meeting, is a halfsister to the Southland sire, Songbird, as she is a daughter of Paper Money (imp.)— Grey Linnet (imp.).

The recent addition of a rising two-vear-old to his string gives Riccarton trainer F. D. Jones two half-brothers to Pilliewinkie as his pupils. The youngster referred to and his two-year-old brother, Arikiwai, are both by imported Paladin from Waterspray.

It transpires that when Piuthair won the Wanganui Cup *ast week she was ridden by the apprentice hcrseman T. Green, and not J. Barry, as telegraphed. Green thus piloted the Kilbroney mare in her recent three successive Cup victories.

It is reported that he Wingatui-trained Battle Colours has recovered from his recent cold and will be a starter at the Gore Racing Club’s fixture to-day. The Solferino gelding is a very promising galloper, but he will have to be at his best to finally measure strides with Wingatui, Overhaul and Beau in the Summer Hack Handicap

Courtly Rose, who is engaged in the Racing Club Handicap at the Gore R.C. meeting to-day, is an Australian-bred mare by Roseworthy—Court Martial, by MartianDiscipline, by Treadmill—Madowla, by Trenton, so she is bred to race well and stay on. This stablemate to John Bradbury, who has always acted like a stayer, ran a verj- encouraging race in the Abbotsford Handicap, the concluding event of the DJ.C. Autumn meeting, when she finished close up to the placed horses.

Christchurch Press reports that at the conclusion of last week’s racing throughout the Dominion, the following comprise the leading division in the list of winning trainers, jockeys, and apprentice jockeysTrainers—C. Giesler 20, E. George A. D. Webster 16, H. Hickey 16, J. JUjm 14, S. Waddell 13, J. William pop 13,

J Boyd 12, F. W. Ellis 12. Jockeys—B. H. Morris 32. R. W. McTavish 32, R. J. Mackie 294, H. Wiggins 274, F. E. Jones 25, F. Voight 24, E. A. Keesing 22j, J. Barry 22, L. G. Morris 21j, C. France 21. Apprentices—T. Green 255, A. H. Driscoll 15, L. Daly 12, N. Trillo 11, S. Wilson 10, T. Tito 10, P. Burgess 9s, A. H. Eastwood 9, H. Lee 9, C. Davies 8, L. J. Ellis 8.

The bill of fare to be placed before patrons by the Gore Racing Club to-day on the opening occasion of that body’s Summer meeting is the best submitted for many season’s past during the second half of the turf season. There appears to be a prospect of keen competition in every race on the card and quite a number of horses are to carry silk for the first time in many months. W’ingatui stables promise to be strongly represented, while the pupils of Southland mentors will be present in force, and several performers from as far away as South Canterbury figure in the lists. The light harness fields may not be quite up to the strength usually found at Gore as far as numbers go, but the class is useful and followers of the American sport may find winners difficult to discover. It is very satisfactory to find that the owners of hurdle horses have responded freely to the call for competitors, as the flat events previously furnished for horses of this class did not produce attractive sport. Following on a lean period, the G.RiC. held a successful Spring fixture this season, and it is to be hoped that a similar experience will fall to the lot of this long-established body during the current week:

A northern scribe furnishes evidence of the growing popularity of the light harness sport in the Far North as follows: Whether or not those who patronise racing have decided that luck will beat knowledge when one is searching for a winner, it is evident the practice of getting up early in the morning to watch the horses at exercise has waned (says the Auckland Star). At one time daybreak would see 300 or 400 “touts” at Ellerslie to watch the final gallops for any meeting, but now the only time there is an attendance is on the eve of the Great Northern meeting. This is because the jumping work is all done after breakfast. Trotting is now the more popular with those who enjoy watching horses at exercise.

The following programme has been drawn up by the Otautau Racing Club Committee for the eighth annual totalisator meeting, to be held on Wednesday, March 30:—1 Crown Stakes Handicap, £BO. Six furlongs. For horses that have not won a race at a totalisator meeting at time of starting. 2 Bayswater Saddle Trot (open), £75. One and a-half miles. 3 Otautau Cup Handicap £175. One and a-quarter miles. 4. Ringway Hack Handicap, £BO. Five furlongs. 5 Otautau Steeplechase Handicap, £l5O. About two and a-half miles. 6 Wallace Harness Trot, £97. Class 3.48. One and a-half miles. 7 Strathmore Hack Handicap, £BO. Six furlongs. 8 Waikouro Welter Handicap, £95. One mile. The following officials were appointed: Judge, Mr A. Macaulay; handicapper, Mr H. A. Pierce; and starter, Mr A. D. Mclvor.

The five-year-old mare Pleasant Rose, by Cronstadt—Pleasant Way, who will represent J. Thistleton’s South Canterbury stable in the Maiden Race at Gore to-day, competed at the recent Cromwell J.C. Annual meeting and ran third in the Cromwell Hack Handicap (6f.) to Arrowmir (9.9) and Blue Dragoon (8.11) under 8.5. On the second day Lady Dilatory (7.13) won the Jockey Club Hack Handicap (6f.) by four lengths, with Pleasant Rose (8.4) and Polly Flinders (8.3) dead-heating for second place. Two other competitors in the Gore event, however, Royal Saxon and Eyed Ova, who ran well at Dunedin, have better claims to consideration while Sparkling Eyes may put in a claim as she has been galloping fairly well on the Southland R.C.’s tracks of late. There are also three well-bred and practically unknown entrants to be considered, vix, A. McKay’s pupil, Countermove (The Ace—Counterscrape), P. T. Hogan’s charge, Cynelli (Cynic, imp.—Trebelli) ; and Symons (Saxby—Lady Symons) trained by F. Shaw at Wingatui and ranking as a brother to the well-known hurdler Kapuna. On what is known of the capabilities of the field Royal Saxon, Eyed Ova and, perhaps, Sparkling Eyes, will keep their rival norices very busy.

In the last twelve months various opinions have been expressed regarding the relative merits of English and Australian horses Some of the views were not altogether flattering to our side of the question, writes ‘Fernhill” in the Melbourne Globe, but it is consoling »o know that practical men like James Scobie and Frank Dempsey saw nothing in the Old Country to convince them that our best horses could not hold their own with the leading performers in England. Scobie is inclined to think that most English gallopers might be superior in mere speed, but if it came to staying there would be a different story to tell. It is not difficult to understand that England is full of horses of exceptional pace. Even a casual study of breeding will show that such a result was inevitable. As competent authorities at Home have stated, much attention has been devoted to the production of short distance performers, and these efforts have not been without success. As an outcome great sprinters are common, and the average of genuine stayers has not been maintained. We need not worry about being a little behind the Old Country in speed if we can still make a boast of the stamina of our racehorses. It is comforting to know that our Manfreds, Heroics and Windbags might still challenge the world from, say, ten furlongs up to two miles, even if they should prove second best in tests oyer shorter courses. We would not mind being beaten for mere speed if we were not compelled to lag behind when it came to the sturdier qualities of courage and endurance.
