THE RED ELEMENT * MEETING AT CHRISTCHURCH INTENTION OF MAKING DEMONSTRATION (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, February 21. “Though perhaps the unemployment position is not so serious in Wellington as in certain other centres,” remarked the Mayor, Mr Norwood, “the position is still bad enough.” Many willing able-bodied men genuinely could not find work. If the position became acute he would approach the Government for authority to raise further special loans for relief work. RELIEF WANTED AT WHANGAREI. Whangarei, February 21. One hundred unemployed, 60 labourers and 40 tradesmen, were represented by a deputation to the Borough Council to-night asking that relief work be instituted with the aid of Government loans if necessary. A scheme is to be prepared by the Works Committee for early consideration. MEETING AT CHRISTCHURCH. THE RED ELEMENT. Christchurch, February 21. It was stated at a meeting of the unemployed to-day that the Red element, members of whom have been ejected from the ranks of those styling themselves the genuine unemployed, intend making a demonstration when the Duke of York visits Christchurch. POSITION NOT ACUTE LOCALLY. Nineteen fresh applications have been recorded on the unemployment books at the Government Labour Bureau during the past week. A total of five have been placed in positions and as four have not re-registered an increase of ten has taken place on the figures of the previous week. The number of unemployed—36—is made up as follows: 24 labourers, four farm hands, one clerk, one blacksmith, one engineer’s fitter, one engineer, one threshing mill hand one butcher, one flaxcutter, and one carpenter’s labourer.
