RAILWAY DISMISSALS

MEN REINSTATED. AWAITING PRIME MINISTER’S RETURN A special meeting of the Southland District Trades and Labour Council was held on Saturday evening to consider what action should be taken in reference to the recent dismissals from the Railway Workshops. The secretary read correspondence gating that the men had been reinstated pending the Prime Minister’s return to New Zealand; also the assurance of the Acting Prime Minister, Hon. W. Downie Stewart, that when the commitments entered into with the shipping companies expired, which would take place within the next three months, the Government would cry a halt on immigration. After some discussion the meeting decided to withhold action for the time being.
