DIPLOMATIC DELATIONS

AUSTRALIA AND AMERICA. I A SIGNIFICANT SPEECH. New York, December 3. In a speech made to-day by Sir Hugh Dennison. Australian trade representative, before the New York &ate Chamber of Commerce, he said: “The same diplomatic relations that rule between America and other countries will probably in not distant future exist between my country and yours.” This is interpreted as meaning that Australia will shortly appoint a Minister plenipotentiary in the United States and has aroused much interest. The feeling is that while such an envoy wuld be enthusiastically received, there is little likelihood that the United States will reciprocate by sending a Minister to Australia. Official circles believe the present consular representatives are sufficient to handle American interests in Australia.—A. and N_Z.
