December 14—Harry Casey v. Lachie McDonald, and opponent to be selected i v. G. Griffiths, at Invercargill. December 27—Harry Casey v. Artie Hay, at Millerton. A novel feature at the Maidenhead Waterman’s Regatta was the contest over the punting championship course between Wilson ‘Edwards, professional punting champion of the Thames, in a punt, and Luigi Dalzennaro, the Venetian gondolier, in his gondola. The men changed craft after the first race, the gondolier punting and Edwards manipulating the gondola. In the first event the punt beat the gondola by a dozen lengths, but on changing craft the gondolier defeated the punting champion, who was uneasy with the. oar, and utterly failed in pace and steering, taking nearly ten minutes to negotiate the turn. It is anomalous that Australians, keenest of cricketers, have for years been content to import all the implements of the game (says a Sydney writer). Many thousands of expensive bats are sold in this country every year, yet no one here seems to have attempted to cut into the lucrative trade by starting bat-making on a large scale, or investigating the possibilities of Australian timbers for bats or wickets. The Australian cricket ball has definitely arrived, and the recent importation of fifty “slips” of the cricket-bat willow by the Commonwealth Government —they are to be planted out at Canberra —may mark the beginning bat-making in this country. There wall be a long wait, for a tree must be twenty years old before being felled, and must be pollarded annually; then the “billets,” split and not sawn, have to season four years mor*. It might be a quicker job, after all, to ferret out some Australian wood having the necessary qpalitics.
