SAID HE WAS A POLICE OFFICERMAN BEFORE COURT. (Pgr United Press Association.) Dunedin, December 3. To-day at the City Police Court, Edward McLelland was charged with that he assumed the designation of a police officer. Accused had sought admission from a gatekeeper at the Forbury course and informed him he was a detective from Wellington on holiday and was investigating a case of theft from the Grand Hotel. Accused in his evidence said he was an examining officer in the Customs and a detective, and denied that he suggested he was a police officer. The Magistrate said accused’s remark to the gatekeeper led to the assumption he was a police officer. Counsel said accused had been gassed in France and was in a bad state of health. The Magistrate, “It seems to me like a mental case.” He ordered accused to come up for sentence any time within twelve months, and ordered him to pay costs.
