SOUTHLAND MUSEUM

MEETING OF BOARD. A meeting of the Southland Museum Board was held in the Y.M.CA. Rooms yesterday, there being present: Messrs C. S. Longuet (chairman), Winter, J. Grant and G. Jaquiery (curator). The curator’s report was as follows: “Since last meeting routine work has been carried out at the museum. Mr J. S. Silversides has been appointed to the position of janitor. He has compiled statistics of attendances-on Sundays which show that the public appreciates the museum and visits it regularly, though there are fewer visitors now that the long days are hero. For the four Sundays in November the attendances have been 37, 7, 31, 25. Country people are frequent visitors on week days. ‘At the invitation of the director of the Dominion Museum I attended a conference of museum representatives on November 3 at the Dominion Museum in Wellington. This conference was called to make recommendations to the Minister of Internal Affairs in regard to the Animals Protection Act, and The Maori Antiquities Act. The conference took a whole day, much good work being accomplished, resulting in a series of recommendations to the Minister of Internal Affairs to have these acts amended in certain directions. Under the kindly guidance of Mr McDonald, assistant director, I spent the best part of a day inquiring into museum matters and acquired a good deal of information which should be of use to us. I desire to express my thanks to the stall of the Dominion Museum for the courtesies extended to me’ as the board’s representative. “Since the last meeting Mr A. S. Kelly, of Tweed street, has presented us with a fine Maori adze of large size. Mr George Moffet has presented us with a good skin of a kakapo and Mr Parmenter, of Gore, with a case of native birds.” It was resolved to ask the legatee of the Stewart collection of coins to place the collection under offer to the Museum Board on the understanding that it is intact-. It was decided that the Invercargill Corporation be asked to make provision for a building to house the museum when the loan proposals are under consideration.
