KILLING COMMENCES NO UNION LABOUR (Per United Press Association.) Wairoa, December 1. The Wairoa Meat Company’s works opened this morning. No union slaughtermen applied for work and the board was manned with free labour. Ample labour is offering. The company has a substantial waiting list of those wanting to come on as soon as supplies of stock are more plentiful. The season opened a fortnight earlier than last year and this will allow the men to become proficient before the heavy rush of stock. A number of unionists applied for work in other departments, but little labour is required at present other than the company’s regular staff. LOADING THE PORT HOBART. Napier, December 1. Mutton killed by free labour is being loaded into the Port Hobart by more free labour. All is quiet. No trouble is feared. THE WELLINGTON CONFERENCE. “NOTHING TO REPORT.” Wellington, December 1. At the Freezing Conference the matters in dispute were discussed. It was officially stated that there was nothing to report. The conference resumes to-morrow. WAINGAWA WORKS, VOLUNTEERS GOING WELL. Masterton, December 1. The volunteers working at the Waingawa freezing works have, according to the management, shown wonderful improvement during the week in which they have been working and a fair number of them are already doing round about the tally of eight head per hour which entitles them to be classed as competent slaughtermen. The number of sheep and lambs killed today was 1030 and the works in every department is proceeding satisfactorily. The management state that even without an addition to the numbers working or further improvement, there will be no difficulty in handling all fat stock likely to be offering this side of the holidays.
