COOK STRAIT CABLE
REPAIRING FAULTS. VESSEL STRIKES ROUGH WEATHER. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, December 1. Unfavourable weather is interfering with the work of the cable steamer Iris which has been chartered by the Government to pick up and repair three faulty cables in Cook Strait.
The steamer arrived from Auckland on November 20 and after taking cable aboard went out into the Strait to commence operations. So far however heavy seas have prevented her from making much progress. Only one day’s work has been done and the vessel is now waiting for a favourable change in the weather.
None of the cables has yet been repaired. Draggirg operations on the ocean bed are always uncertain as the method of working with the ise of grapplers is necessarily somewhat crude and rough weather adds considerably to the difficulties of locating the line to be rep-aired.
