LOCOMOTIVE MEN
WORKING CONDITIONS. CONFERENCES CONCLUDED. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, November 7. The conferences which have been held during the last week, between the ActingMinister of Railw’ays, the Railways Board, and the Executive Officers of the Enginedrivers’, Firemens’ and Cleaners’ Association, in regard to the pay and working conditions of locomotive men, were satisfactorily concluded on Saturday morning. The Acting-Minister of Railways, the Hon. F. J. Puolleston, announced subsequently that in regard to the items in dispute, the department had conceded the question of penal rates and a satisfactory arrangement in regard to payment on a mileage basis had also been reached. The only question on w'hich an agreement had not been reached was in regard to a general increase in wages on which the department had not been able to make any offer. It is understood that the association intends to ask the Minister of Railways when he returns, for a commission to go into this question.
