A BAD RECORD

TWICE DECLARED HABITUAL CRIMINAL. (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, November 1. With a list of previous convictions and after having twice been declared an habitual criminal Richard John Hackett, aged 45, pleaded guilty in the Police Court to three charges of theft involving £lB, two charges of stealing a wallet and contents valued at £3 and 14 cheque forms valued at 2/4, and a charge of obtaining beer and whisky to the value of 12/6 by means of a valueless cheque. Chief Detective Cummings said accused had been released on licence as an habitual criminal in February, 1925. He did very well for some time and reported regularly to the police. Then he commenced a series of offences and for the past few months had been roaming about the country living on settlers. His licence had now been cancelled, which meant that he automatically went back to prison until the Prisons Board saw fit to release him again. The Magistrate, Mr Cutten, sentenced accused to three months imprisonment on one charge and one month on each of the others, the be concurrent.
