The London and North England Railway Company has placed an order for 30,000 tons of ballast with the Bestwood Coal and Iron Company near Nottingham. An increase from 240,000 to 440,000 candle power has been effected at Lowestoft High Lighthouse, built on the site of, it is said, the first lighthouse built in England in 1609. That was superseded by another lighthouse in 1676, which did service for nearly 200 years, the presentstructure having been built in 1874.
