STRANGE CASE

WOMAN MURDERS DAUGHTER-IN-LAW. STORY OF AVARICE AND HATRED. (Rec. 11.5 p.m.) Paris, October 30. A remarkable trial has concluded with the imposition of the death sentence upon the wealthy Madame Lefebure for the murder of her daughter-in-law. The crime revealed a story of avarice and hatred. The young wife hesitated before marriage but consented because she thought it a good match. After that haggling occurred between the two families over the marriage settlement, over the wedding presents to be given, over the honeymoon and over the young wife’s expenditures. Madame always hated the girl’s family and determined that no offspring of theirs should be a grandchild of hers. When she learned that the young wife was about to become a mother, Madame invited the couple to accompany her on a drive and shot the girl dead with a revolver in the motor car. Doctors refuse to pronounce her insane. A curious feature of the trial was the son’s obvious fear of his mother. It seemed that while he was giving evidence he waited for her to prompt him as to what he should say. His chief anxiety when he found his wife was dead was to make sure her jewelled ring was not lost. —A. and NX
