VICTORIA RACING CLUB. OPENING OF SPRING MEETING. RAMPION WINS VJi.C. DERBY. MANFRED TAKES MELBOURNE STAKES. McCARTEN PILOTS A GOOD WINNER. (By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright.) (Rec. 5.5 p-m.) Melbourne, October 31. The weather was boisterous, with light drops of rain, for the opening day of the VJl.C.’s Spring meeting at Flemington. There was a large attendance, including the Governor-General and State Governors. Several New Zealanders were present, also the members of the Parliamentary delegation. Caimcroa? was sixth early in the race and only won the Maiden Plate narrowly. Hie rider (H. Jones) and trainer (Fisher), also won this race last season with King of On de. Royal Feast finished fast in the Manbyrnong Plate and scored brilliantly from Euston. The New Zealand horseman, M. McCarten, rode the winner, who cost 700 guineas as a yearling. In the Melbourne Stakes Manfred was second early in the race, but ran to the front in the straight and won without being extended. This is his fourth successive win. Rampion was always prominent, but was hard pushed to win the VJI.C. Derby from< Heroic’s brother, Thracian. limerick, who was finishing well, was a good third. The time ranks as the second best for the race. This is S. Cracknell’s first Victoria Derby mount. Rampion has now equalled Manfred’s record of winning both Derbys. The Cantala Stakes produced a great race. Amounts finished strongly and won brilliantly. This is Amounis’ fourth win in his last five starts. In the Hotham Handicap Beedos was second last at the turn, but finished with a good run and won handsomely. He is engaged in the Melbourne Cup at 6.7. The Spring meeting of the Masterton Pacing Club was concluded at Trentham on Saturday. In the early part of the day (he weather was breaking with a strong northerly wind, but later on the wind dropped and the conditions all round were good. The track was in good order. Two features of the day were the winning appearance of Royal Ceves, a two-year-old, considerably above the average, and the victory of Inferno in the open sprint. Inferno owing to his unruliness at the barrier, was despatched behind his field, but he caught and passed them in the straight in brilliant fashion. There was a very good attendance of the public, and, considering it was Wellington’s fourth day of racing in a week, the totalisator turnover was good, and represents a very substantial increase pn the £14,276 10s which the Masterton Club handled on its own course on its second day last year, while the total for the meeting was £68,362 10s, as against £26,917 10s. A substantial profit should accrue as the result of the meeting. An inquiry was held into Royal Mint’s alleged inconsistent form, but no action was taken. Backers made another bad start in the October Welter, making Killochra and Star Shell solid favourites, only to see a rank outsider in Ardfinnan come home from a moderately backed runner in Gauntlet. From the start the order was Star Shell, Lady Ben, Gauntlet and Killochra. Racing round the bend Vexations was three lengths in front of Gauntlet, Star Shell, Lady Gay and Killochra Vexatious led into the straight from Star Shell, Lady Gay and Jubilance. Jubilance was in front two furlongs from home from where there was a great finish over the last bit. Ardfinnan drew out and won by a length from Gauntlet, who was a similar distance in front of Jubilance, Killochra was only a head away fourth, with Star Shell in line and Polyastra right up, there was a gap then to Koauau, Lady Ben and Lady Gay. Killochra ran a great race under his big weight. Welkne was a solid favourite for the Trial Handicap, more than twice as well backed as General Wai. There was good money for Cerf and Comedic. Welkne was ii. front from the start closely attended by General Wai, Petal, Cerf and Essential. In rhe straight Cerf came on the rails, and, taking charge a couple of furlongs from home, won comfortably by a length and ahalf from General Wai, with Royal Pointer running on strongly into third place, only half a length away. Petal, who carried 51b. overweight, ran a fair race into fourth place, and then came Essential, Sandburr, Welkne, and Comedic. Welkne completely collapsed over the last bit. Landguard got left at the post. Frenzied Finance was a solid favourite for the Two-year-Old Handicap with money for Royal Ceves and Panther. The latter, who was coupled with Tone, carried 91b. over weight. From start to finish there was only one horse in the race, Royal Ceves, who led on to the course proper from Frenzied Finance and Panther and then came on to win with ridiculous ease from Frenzied Finance. Priceless was third a long way back, just in front of Panther, and th m came Laity, Tone, Grey Mist and Tom Bracken. There was a false start at which Tom Bracken got left, and, once let go in earnest. Wild Pigeon was left, while Tom Bracken and Exhibition lost a lot of ground. It did not affect the result. The winner is a good one. He is a well-grown colt, Australian-bred, and runs in the same colours as Killochra and Polyphemus. Kilmiss, on whom R. Reed had the mount, was a slightly better favourite than Mint Leaf for the Spring Handicap, Outfit being the next in order. Amongst several who were very evenly backed Royal Mint carried considerably more support than he did the first day and the improvement which was not unexpected by anyone who witnessed his first day’s effort duly materialised. He led practically from the start to finish, only surrendering the lead in the middle stages of the race to occupy a handy position from which he came away to score decisively from Outfit, who had again to put up with second place, his fourth in succession. Royal Mint’s stablemate, Mint Leaf, occupied a handy position early in the race, but lost it in the middle stages and then came on very strongly at the finish. Royal Mint showed up at the start from Bronstell, Molto, Conviction, Kilmiss, Mint Leaf and Outfit. There was little change to the straight except Mint Leaf went back to the rear. Bronstell led two furlongs from home and was immediately tackled by Royal Mint, with Kilmiss coming up. Outfit hung on gamely but Royal Mint took the lead about a furlong from home and won decisively by a length, while Mint Leaf finished very well and was only another length off. The remainder of the field were a long way back, Kilmiss getting fourth, with Bronstell, Molto, Catcall and Mountain Jean in line with her. Mint Leaf was a good thing beaten. An inquiry was held into Royal Mint’s form as compared with his running the previous day. It was found that while the evidence did not justify definite action the running of the horse was viewed with grave suspicion. Diogenes was favourite for the Opaki Handicap from Hipo, Vaward and Buoyant in very even wagering. Buoyant led practically from start to finish and won decisively from the two favourites. The field ran in line for a furlong when Buoyant showed out from Beaumont and Kilfaire, the last two being Vaward and Olympic. The order was unchanged down the back. At the five furlongs the order was Buoyant, Beaumont, Diogenes and Hipo. Crossing the top Buoyant was clear of Beaumont and Hipo and then came Diogenes, with Olympic moving up. Hipo made strenuous endeavours to overhaul the leader but Buoyant won very decisively by a length, Hipo beating Diogenes by two lengths, while Olympic was only half a length off fourth, and then, two lengths further away, came Vaward, followed by Beaumont, Alyson and Kilfaire. Merry Jest was a firm favourite for the Macara Handicap, well clear of Nadarino, Royal Damon and Inferno, who had very little between them. Inferno, who claimed a 51b. allowance, threw his jockey twice before the start and was eventually despatched behind the field, giving them at least four lengths start, yet at the finish he won decisively and was responsible for a brilliant performance. Nadarino and Gold Box were the most prominent from the start, closely attended by Bonideer, Epistle and Royal Damon. This was the order to the false rail, where Merry Jest became a little more prominent. Epistle was in front at the distance and going well when Inferno swept up from the rear and finishing in a determined fashion, cut Epistle out of the major place by ha*f a length, Merry Jest was a length away third, with Anthonie a good fourth, and then came Royal Damon, Nadarino and Gold Box in line. Blonde, Joy Bird, and Santonio were the favourites for the Waipipi Handicap very evenly backed, Benmure, Misgovern and

Joy Bird was the order to the straight, where Misgovern shot away with Joy Bird challenging. In a great finish Joy Bird hung on gallantly and beat Misgovern by a short head, Santonio, who had occupied a rearward position for the best part of the running, and who also did not get too good a passage, was a moderate third. Benmure was a poor fourth, and the others were well beaten. In the large field of 18 hacks for the concluding event there was considerable casting about amongst backers for the winner. Polonaise was a better favourite than Gleninnes, with money for several others of whom Royal Time, the Spode—Note bracket, and Royal Game were the most fancied. The favourite failed substantially to justify the support accorded him, never being in the picture. Royal Time on the rails, Gleninnes and Riverna shot away from the start and by the time they had reached the course proper they were well clear of the bunch. Royal Time faded back at the distance from where Gleninnes and Riverna had a battle royal. At the post the judge was unable to separate them, while five lengths off came the bunch, headed by Jazzy, Ideal Lady, Royal Time and Resinous. RACING IN SYDNEY. A MAORILANDER SUCCESSFUL. BOISTEROUS WEATHER EXPERIENCED ARRIVALS AT RICCARTON. (Special to the Times.) Christchurch, October 31. The Banks Peninsula R.C.’s Spring meeting at Motukarara on Saturday was not nearly as w’ell attended as usual, a number of factors going to prevent many people from attending. The Timaru Trotting Races were on, and the weather was much too boisterous to encourage thoughts of a day in the country, and with the N.Z. Cup Carnival week right on top of us people were satisfied to wait until this period to speculate their loose cash. The track at Motukarara was in splendid order, but the racing was not very interesting as almost all of the eight races were won very easily. The six runners in the Okain’s Trial Stakes were not much good, and the moderate Gay Bird, by Gay Lad—Sporting Lady, found no difficulty in winning, her nearest opponent being Assurance, w-ho, so far, has never produced in public the good things he had done in private. The four-year-old Bertha Bingen, by Nelson Bingen—Bertha Belle, made no bones about winning the Duvauchelle Trot, which was run over twelve furlongs. P. Riddle drove her a very confident race for, always well placed, he allowed first Carnival and Logan Lilly, then Drake to battle for the load until the straight was reached. Then he slackened the mare out and she paddled home a very easy winner well clear of Drake, the next to finish in strung-out order were Miss Dorothy, Carnival, Logan Lilly. Once the barrier was released there was only one in the Halswell Hack Handicap, for Sagittarius soon drew away from his opponents and won pulling up by four lengths from Taboo. The winner is by Arrowsmith from Going Up and like his parents, h 6 is a very bold galloper and one who will certainly win many races, but it is doubtful if his owner-trainer, A. McAulay, will ever get this gelding to go far for he is a very hard puller. Margaret Berney won the Akaroa Handicap so very easily from Tarleton, who had beaten her at Rangiora on Labour Day, that it looks as if the daughter of Adjudge— Rosa Chamberlain (imp.) will be fairly good class in the autumn. In this race she allowed Starmist and Kilbox to make the pace for nearly six furlongs, then she pulled to the front and the race was all over, for, despite the efforts of Tarleton, and later Goosestep, she steadily enlarged the gap between herself and her pursuers and won without having been off the bit. On their running Tarleton and Goosestep look to have no prospects of winning the N.Z. Cup. . Economist was a racehorse among hacks in the Le Bons Welter and many people were sore at not participating in the royal dividend after he had won easily. Others were allowed to make the running to the straight, then Economist took charge and the race was over. Nothing had a chance with him. A poor lot paraded for the Kaituna Hack Handicap, and the Antagonist—Brambletye gelding, Thorndale, found little difficulty in beating them. Had there been anything in the race capable of keeping him busy Thorndale might not have won, as his previous efforts in public did not suggest that he possessed much courage. Thorndale is owned and trained by F. P. Claridge. He also trains Economist and so must have had a very good day as both paid handsome prices. Meb, who had been withdrawn from the trot early in the day, pleased her army of backers by never leaving the ultimate result of the Little River Trot in doubt. Six runners paraded for the Brackenfield Flying Handicap, the betting in which was surprising, as Booster was not nearly as well supported on the machine as Scrip, who was obviously short of work, and Finora. Finora put herself out of court by falling at the start, but, doubtless, it made little difference to the result, as she does not carry weight at all well. Scrip set out to make the pace, but Booster kept her hard at it, despite his load of 9.6 (inc. 71b penalty), and he had her galloped to a standstill shortly after entering the straight, then he went on to win easily, while Scrip,

who was done to a turn, failed to stave off a late challenge from Frivolous and had to be content with third money. Booster is undoubtedly a speedy and courageous gelding, and as such will take lots of beating in ultimate races. He starts in during the Cup Week. The following horses arrived on Saturday: Reremoana, Helen, Lady Desmond, Enare, Mimetic, Beacon Light, Glad Light, Shirley, Rigoletto, Father O’Flynn, Rascal. J. Beale has been engaged to ride Shirley in the Stewards’ Handicap and Agrion in the Welcome Stakes. Should Eulalie start C. Emerson will steer her. It rained heavily for a few hours early on Sunday morning and a light drizzle is still falling which will do the grass gallops at Riccarton a lot of good CRICKET. SATURDAY’S GAMES POSTPONED. Owing to the sodden state of the grounds, all cricket matches set down for decision on Saturday afternoon were postponed till next Saturday. SCHOOL GAMES. CENTURY TO JUNIOR BOY. On Friday, October 29, St. George School met Waihopai on Doon street grounds, in the second round of the local school’s cricket competition. St. George batting first, made 38, Patterson and Kennedy topping the scores with 7 runs each. For Waihopai Jack Camm took two wickets for 0, Tommy Thompson 4 for 8, Ness Polson 1 for 1, and Winston Strang 3 for 14. Waihopai replied with 212 for 9 wickets. An excellent stand was made by Winston Strang, who made 117 not out, and Jack Scandrett, who compiled 35 not out. Both boys played sparkling cricket and displayed a variety of forceful strokes all round the wicket. Ness Polson also batted well for a neat 18 runs. The ground fielding of the St. George team was very keen. Gutzwitz secured the bowling honours for his side with 5 wickets for 75 runs. BOWLS. ' MATCHES POSTPONED. All bowling fixtures for Saturday were postponed as the rain of the last few days had rendered the greens unfit for match play. BOXING, AUSTRALIAN BANTAM TITLE. THURBON BEATS SWIFT. (Rec. 5.5 pan.) Sydney, October 30. Stan Thurbon, holder, beat Tommy Swift for the bantam-weight boxing championship of Australia, on points.—A. & N.Z. “A SMOKE FIT FOR A KING." G. E. M. Wellington, writes:—“After reading some of the letters written by Edgeworth boosters I have decided to sing a few words of praise for Edgeworth also. I find it to be the only tobacco giving me complete satisfaction. It certainly is a pleasure to smoke a tobacco with a pleasant taste which at the same time does not bite the tongue. I have 7 tried many brands of tobacco recommeded by friends but have only been able to enjoy one tobacco thoroughly, Edgeworth. Now I take tips on Tobacco from no one, as I am satisfied in my own mind that, there is no better tobacco sold than Edgeworth. Please put me down as an Edgeworth Booster. “It’s a smoke fit for a King.” First class tobacconists sell Edgeworth at 1/8 per tin and with latest vacuum packing. Barlow Bros., N.Z.
