COAL STRIKE
MINERS WARNED MUST FACE ECONOMIC FACTS SPEECH BY HOME SECRETABY (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) London, October 27. Sir W. Joynson-Hjeks, Secretary for Home Affairs, in a speech at Aylesbury, said some people consi<iered it not the Government’s duty to interfere in the coal strike in the way the Government had done, but the Government whs bound to try to bring the terrible dispute to an end. It had failed gloriously, but there was no use having another omference when rhe miners refuse to face economic facts. He added that the Government was determined to maintain peace. While one miner desired to work the Government would use the whole of its resources to protect him. ‘Tf Mr Cook asks the miners to obey the Cbuncil of War in opposition to the Government I tell him the resources of civilisation are not exhausted.”—A. and N.Z. UNION CONGRESS TO MEET MINERS. AUTHORITY TO NEGOTIATE WANTED. London, October 27. fallowing upon the Trades Union Council's interview with Mr Baldwin, the Trades Union General Council has decided to ask the Miners Executive to meet them at the earliest moment. It is stated to at the object is to secure authority for the Miners' Federation to ask the Government to summon a conference of the coal-owners and miners to discuss a settlement on a basis of toe Coal Counniasion's report.—A. and N.Z. AUSTRALIAN COAL IN DEMAND. Sydney, October 28. In addition to the Waikawa eight other vessels have been chartered to load coal for South American ports owing to the coal strike in England. Shortages of coal supplies have also occurred in Egypt. Already one vessel has been chartered to load coal in Australia for an Egyptian port.—A. and NX PROPAGANDA IN AUSTRIA STOPPED.
