On Labour Day a team comprising practically the Bluff first eleven travelled to Winton to play a friendly match with the Winton players, whom they defeated by an innings and 136 runs. Bluff batted first and compiled 213 runs after a little over two hours’ play. Parry retired after making 72. Crozier also retired for 41. Macdonald 35, Woods 18, Long 15, Brashaw 14 were the chief scorers. Collingwood 3 for 45, Ward 2 for 36, Gullick 2 for 41 obtained the wickets. Winton’s first strike realised 38. Donald 1 for 23, Long 3 for 6., Silvester 4 for 4. During the interval the Winton team provided afternoon tea and the reverse they sustained did not prevent them from making the outing as pleasant a one as possible for their visitors. AWARUA BOATING CLUB. The Awarua Boating Club held their annual social on Labour Day in the Drill Hall, Bluff. There was a very large attendance and the hall was tastefully decorated with rowing emblems and implements. For the dancers Rigby’s orchestra provided choice music and Messrs IL Jamieson and R. Parsons acted as M.’sC. There was a large entry for the euchre tournament and the prizes were secured by Miss Stewart 1, Mrs J. Dawson 2, Mrs McCarthy 3 (ladies) ; and Mr H. McQuarrie 1, R. Bagrie 2, W. Newall 3 (men). The catering of Mr V. Wait was all that could be desired. During the evening the president, Mr E. Budd, referred to the victory of the Otago Club in Australia and stated that the winning crew had been twice defeated by the Bluff four. There was a fair attendance at the formal opening of the boating season last evening. At 6 o’clock the president, Mr E. Budd, addressed a fair attendance. He referred to the meritorious doings of the youths’ pairs which had been first and second each time they competed at Bluff, Invercargill and Riverton, also the maiden crew, which had been first in every regatta except the championship in which they were second. He asked their co-operation for the new captain and declared the season open amid applause and trusted they would have a successful season. Boats were manned but a heavy downpour of rain prevented anything of a display.
