OTAUTAU NOTES

THE RECREATION GROUND. (From Our Correspondent.) A meeting of representatives of the football and hockey clubs, Athletic Society and Progressive League was held in the Board room on Friday evening to consider the question of improvements to the Recreation Ground, when the following were present: Misses W. and M. Arthur and Stroud, Messrs J. 0. Millar, G. H. Hodges, G. F. Griffiths, E. Ottrey, G. Sinclair And Dr. Reekie. An apology was received from Mr G. H. Bone. Mr Millar was voted to the chair, and said that all knew for what purpose the meeting was convened. If extra space were provided on the Recreation Ground it would make it possible for football and hockey games to be played at the same time. Last year Mr Collett had measured the ground, and had assured them that provided the football area was shifted to the other end there was ample room for a hockey ground, the estimated cost being between £lOO and £l3O. If this suggestion was carried out, tenders would have to be called for the work straight away in order that a good sole ot grass would be on the ground for the winter, and a carnival could not be run before February or March. He was prepared to back the project to the extent of £5O if the work was proceeded with immediately. He called for suggestions to raise the necessary money. Mr Hodges stated that the Athletic Society wanted the cash, while the league was al»o in need of funds. Mr Sinclair mentioned that a considerable amount of work had been done on the ground, which was valued at £l3O, by the Athletic Society, to the benefit of all the clubs concerned. He was of the opinion that if a carnival was held, the society was entitled to some consideration. It was in financial difficulties at present, and £2O to £25 would assist them considerably. Mr Griffiths thought a working bee could do the work required. He favoured the idea of holding three or four large functions, all the money from which would be pooled and divided pro rata to any club or society in need of funds. He moved “that it be a recommendation to the league to call a meeting of all bodies interested to make,.concentrated efforts during the year for tne purpose of raising the money.”— Seconded bv Miss Stroud and carried. It was resolved that an endeavour be made to raise £l2O in £1 donations throughout the district, the money to be repaid by holding a carnival, and interest to be paid at the rate oj 5 per cent. A sub-committee, comprising Messrs. Hodges, Millar and Dr Reekie, was set up to interview Mr Baker, the county engineer, with the object of getting an estimate of the work required, with, power to call tenders for same. Miss Stroud was appointed secretary pro. tem. and Mr Hodges treasurer. It was decided to apply to the Wallace Minstrels and the Town Board for donations. ’ ' All present were appointed a canvassing committee. It was decided that the next meeting be held on Monday, November 1. BAND OF HOPE CONCERT. There was a large attendance at the Band of Hope concert on Friday evening. The Rev. J. B. Bickerstaff presided at the opening of the proceedings and Mr Fisher later in the evening. The programme opened with a pianoforte selection by Miss N.
