SEEKING PEACE
THE CHINESE WAR. REDS MORE CAUTIOUS EVACUATION OF FIVE PROVINCES DEMANDED (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) Pekin, October 25. Leaders in the Yangtse Valley war are still toying with peace. Sun Chuan-fang has advised Chiang Kai-shek, the Red commander, that he is agreeable to suspend hostilities provided the Reds withdraw to Hankow and evacuate his domain consisting of the five south-east provinces— Anwhei, Fukien, Kiangi, Chekiang and Kiangsu. Since Chekiang’s unsuccessful revolt Sun’s prestige has been considerably enhanced and the Reds have adopted a more cautious attitude. The officials of several Labour Unions in territory just outside Shanghai foreign settlements have fled and their offices were closed as the result of the declaration of special martial law, which is stricter 'than ordinary Chinese martial law. The French authorities have erected barbed wire barricades in thoroughfares leading to Chinese territory—A. & N.Z.
