REVOLTING CASE
CHILDREN LOCKED LN ROOM. HUSBAND AND WIFE SENT TO PRISON (Rec. 10.25 p.m.) London, October 25. Janet Jenkinson and her husband were each sentenced to nine months’ hard labour In a Court crowded with hostile neighbours, Janet Jenkinson and her husband were charged at Manchester with cruelty to three children, stated a cable received on October 17. It was stated that the couple went away leaving their children imprisoned for three days in a small bedroom with only nine slices of bread, and some margarine and water. The door was locked and the handle roped. The children finished the food on the first day and the boy eventually succeeded in attracting the attention of neighbours. The police said the girl, aged four, was a mere skeleton and unable to stand. The prosecuting solicitor explained that the children were the husband’s and not the wife’s, this probably accounting for her conduct. The accused were committed for trial. Bail was refused, the Magistrate saying they would be safer in custody.
