FASTER STEAMERS
ANOTHER SCHEME ADVANCED. SPEEDING UP MEAT TRADE. London, October 25. Hard upon the heels of the announcement of Mr Connolly’s scheme for a faststeamer senice to Australia comes information that Mr Amery laid before Cabinet the proposals of Australian Chilled Meat and Food Supplies, Limited, for a weekly service of oil-driven, 16-knot steamers, which will help to exploit the company’s West Australian concessions. The directors include the former South Australian Governors, Lord Galway and Sir William Wetgall. The technical report of Mr R. P. Wilson says the company is more concerned in opening up the north-west than in fighting Mr Connolly for mail carriage. The ships will do the voyage in 26 days. The company is only awaiting the Australian and British Governments’ approval. The ships will confine their attention to the northwest and West Australian ports. The scheme is virtually that originally suggested by Mr F. G. Manning. “There is room for both companies,” was Mr Connolly’s comment.—A. & N_Z.
