THE WATERWORKS PUMP.

To the Editor. Sir, —In the recommendation to come before the Town Council on Tuesday night there is an item that a “Rees” Returbo Pump be purchased for the Waterworks standby plant. What has happned to our friend “Boving” who has supplied our water so long, that this stranger has to work in double harness, or give him spell about. Is it a fact that a new pump cannot be fitted on to the bore where the “Boving” is working, without stopping the latter’s operations? In any case it seems strange that the council should agree to buy a new pump without knowing if it is suitable. The report of the experts re our pumping system has not been published yet. Why then this haste ? Our Town Engineer, Mr Fox, has finished his term of sendee and who will take the blame if the proposal is a "dud ?” It is not fair to hand a pump over to Mr Gum ley, our new engineer, and say: “We require more water, but here is a pump for you. We don’t know anything about it beyond what a catalogue says, but it will be all right.” Why not hang up the purchase of a new pump until the expert’s report comes to hand, and the engineer has got settled. The matter should be well discussed before saddling the town with another £l,OOO expense. What if Dunsdale has to come after all as our mayor and others declare? —I am, etc., 40 YEARS RESIDENT.
