SPORTING

GORE RACING CLUB. ANNUAL SPRING MEETING OPENS. RAVENNA WINS GORE CUP. DECREASED FINANCIAL RETURNS. Following on heavy rain overnight beautiful weather was experienced for the opening day of the Gore Racing Clubs Spring meeting, the only drawback being a fairly strong breeze which held almost throughout the proceedings. There was a large attendance, including many visitors from the Invercargill and Western Districts, while a large number journeyed from Dunedin and wayside stations to be present. The Gov-ernor-General and suite arrived on the course early in the afternoon from the Lakes District and were welcomed by the officials of the club and the member for the district, the Hon. G. J. Anderson (Minister of Labour, Mines and Marine. I The enclosures and lawns were in splendid order and the racing track provided a fast gal loping surface, although it has been keener on some past occasions when rain had not fallen for some time previously. The gate receipts amounted to £786 3/-, as compared with £929 on the corresponding day of last season, a decrease of £143 17/-. The meeting was very capably conducted and the president (Mr A. T. Pettigrew! and his alert and hard-working band of honor ary officials to be congratulated on the completeness of their arrangements and the punctuality with which the programme was carried out. The South Island stipendiary steward (Mr G. E. Curry! was present and conducted several inquiries, While he did not fail to exercise official control where turf professional people were concerned. The starting of Mr. A. D. Mclvor was of a high standard of excellence and he sent his fields away promptly and on even terms. The racing was very interesting, despite the restricted number of starters in two events, and a spirited contest in the final race sent patrons of the Eastern District club away in a pleasant framt? of mind. The only discordant note in connection with the racing was the indifferent running of Coastguard in the Eastern High-weight Handi cap, and it has to be remarked that his jockey did not appear to handle him to the best advantage. The Judicial Committee promptly inquired into the running of the Dunedin-owned hurdler and ultimately decided to accept the explanation tendered by the jockey, owner, and trainer concerned. The totalisator investments amounted to £19,515 10s, as compared with £23,054 10s on the corresponding .day of last season, a decrease of £3,539. The small fields forward in two races, and the substantial prices returned in several instances no doubt accounted for a fairly large proportion of the decreased wagering total. The following are the results:— PUKERAU HACK HANDICAP, £l2O, second £2O, third £lO. Six furlongs. 3 W. Baird’s br m Good as Gold, by Paper Money—Kilalla, 3vrs. 8.1 (L. J. Ellis) 1 9 J. O. Cooper) In the early wagering Good As Gold led Sweet Melody then Arrowmir came into the market. Finally Sweet Melody elected first selection, carrying ninety chances more than Arrowmir with Good As Gold about one hundred supporters off third fancy. Then Credit, Solzia, and the coupled Royal Kilt and Mudlark all well backed. It was a fine pool in the machine with £2,250 showing. From a good start Credit began fast from Soldier’s Hope, then Good As Gold joined the leader. Royal Kilt and Olympia were last to leave the barrier. After racing round the far turn Good As Gold just led Credit, then came Soldier’s Hope and Olympia, followed by Sweet Melody and a bunch. Leading into the straight Good as Gold drew out to win by three lengths from Soldier’s Pride, who was a* length ahead of Mudlark, who came fast to defeat Arrowmir by a head for third place, Sweet Melody was fifth, followed by Olympia and Real Glad. Below the distance Credit faded out rapidly. Time, Imin 15secs. MATAURA TROT HANDICAP (harness), £l4O, second £3O, third £l5. Class 4.54. Two miles. 1 S. Wood Pointer was always first selection and finally carried about three hundred chances more than Lingfield, with Mate o’ Mine about two hundred supporters off in third place, while Rollicking Bells and Nihilist Junr. also attracted strong support. At the start Roving Don and Quickmatch lost a great deal of ground while Cardinal and Blue began slowly. Wood Pointer and Nihilist Junr. began well and were soon well clear from Lingfield and Cardinal and Blue. At the end of a mile Wood Pointer still led Nihilist Junr. past the stand, then came Cardinal and Blue and Lingfield. Going into the back stretch Rollicking Bells drew out from the bunch and went up to Lingfield, while Cardinal and Blue was beaten. The two leaders entered the home straight almost on terms, but Wood Pointer easily held his own in the race to the judge to win easily by a bare length from Nihilist Junr., while Lingfield was nearly one hundred yards away third, closely attended by Rollicking Bflls, then came Ding Dong Bell, Roving Don, and Lucky Dillon. Times: 4min 51 4-ssecs; 4min 52 l-ssecs; 4min 58 4-ssecs. GORE CUP, £275, second £5O, third £25. One mile and a-quarter. 1 L. C. Hazlett’s ch m Ravenna, by Solferino—Droski, aged, 9.2 (A. E. Ravenna always favourite finally carried over three hundred and sixty chances more than Full Swing while Kilfane only about two hundred and seventy supporters fourth off his position on the list causing some surprise. From a good start Kilfane made the running from Full Swung while Ravenna was always handy. Going to the back Full Swing ran to the front and Ravenna took second place. After passing the far turn Kilfane drifted back. Full Swing*just led into the straight, but Ravenna at once moved out and in the run home beat the second selection easily by a bare length, while Kilfane was about ninety yards off IhzuL Time. Ellis)* Equerry was always at the head of the wagering eventually carrying two hundred and twenty chances more than French Belle who was second in demand from the outset. Quite a number of others were strongly supported including Sweet Melody, Bilbo, Jack o’ Lantern and Jolly Glad. Strathnaver and Jolly Glad gave trouble then Jack o’ Lantern caused slight bother. From a good start Bilbo and Equerry were first to break the line, but Sweet Melody soon took up the running. At the far turn Sweet Melody was attended by Jack o’ Lantern and Jolly Glad, with Equerry at the head df the others. At the last turn Jolly Glad went after Sweet Melody. Sweet Melody appeared to hold her own with ease to win by two lengths from Jolly Glad, with Equerry three lengths away third, a head in front of Jack o’ Lantern, who was followed by Bilbo and Strathnaver. There was no sign of French Belle on the journey and she may have got into trouble in a scramble over the first furlong. Time, Imin 29 l-ssecs.

An inquiry was held into the cause of alleged interference with French Belle, but it was decided that there was not sufficient evidence to justify action being taken. From a good start Dawson Bingen led Vasiliki and El Caron past the stand. The field closed up in the back stretch and Nelson McElwyn just led a big bunch round the far turn. Racing to the straight Sandown was moving up and getting a good run on the inside he drew out to win by three lengths from Jock’s Pal, with Golden Dawn five lengths off third just in front of Nelson McElwyn, then came Chiming King and Rosaleen. There was little change racing to the home turn except that Comic Song, who was under pressure, was moving up. Leading into the straight Corn Money ran on, but had to be stirred up to win from Comic Song by two lengths, with Master Sandstone three lengths off third, then came All Style and Ecuador, with Valdamo some distance awav. Time, Imin 13 3-ssecs. EASTERN HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP, £l4O, second £25, third £l5. One mile and a-quarter. 2 R. Me Nay’s ch g Soldier’s Pride, by Soldier’s Chorus—Canrobert mare, aged, 9.12 (A. S. In the early stages of the race there was no pace on, then Soldier’s Pride ran to the front from Maungamoe and Coastguard. Going into the back stretch Coastguard ran into second place. At the far turn Maungamoe raced up again and headed Coastguard approaching the home bend. Soldier’s Pride led into the straight and won comfortably by two lengths, with Coastguard getting up in the last few strides to beat Maungamoe by a short head for second place. Time, 2min 15secs. An inquiry was held into the running of Coastguard and it was decided to accept the explanation of the jockey, owner and trainer. t MURIHIKU HANDICAP, £l5O, second £3O, third £l5. Corn Rigs first showed out-from Warhaven and Bugle Note, while Soltoe was last to move. Corn Rigs led Warhaven round the far turn and was still showing the way at the home turn, with Overdrawn moving up into third place. Before the distance was reached Corn Rigs was headed by Warhaven and Overdrawn and the pair ran clear to provide an exciting finish. With both jockey’s busy and Warhaven coming with a nice final effort, the pair reached the judge almost in line, Overdrawn winning by a.

Raukura, the warm favourite for the Trial Handicap, duly won but he was hard pressed for a time by Rising Star. Airtight, the second favourite, was first away,

soon to be displaced by Raukura. The order into the straight was Raukura, Bloey, Acre and Airtight and in the run home Raukura won by a length from Rising Star with a rank outsider in Lithall a similar distance away third. Then came Manly, Takini, Airtight and Rillet in a line. There were only five runners in the Brewer Handicap and Pouma was a good favourite, £277 more being invested on her than on Kiosk. The favourite, Kiosk, Lady Bentinck and Shut Eye was the order along the back and at the half-mile Kiosk had his neck in front of Pouma. The latter led into the straight from Kiosk, Lady Bentinck and Bonogne and in the run home, Bonogne did best, beating Lady Bentinck by half a length with Kiosk two and a-half lengths away third. Pouma who was next was badly interfered with at the half distance by Bonogne, although she was already beaten. The winner ran a bad last the first day. Bonogne’s rider, P. Adlam, was suspended for the remainder of the day.

Halgina, making his first appearance over the sticks, was favourite in the Hack Hurdles but the betting took a wide range, both Kareao and Tawehi being at good prices. Gold Peak made nearly all the running but as they came t to the straight the second time Kareao and Halgina were together followed by Sea View, Ratapeko and Tawehi. The favourite stopped quickly from the last hurdle and Ratapeko and then Tawehi joined issue* with Kareao. In a slashing finish Tawehi won by a head from Ratapiko with Kareao a neck away. Sea View was fourth and Halgina and Gold Peak next.

Another five horse field contested the Wilson Hack High Weight Handicap, No Response and Lady Anstruther carrying the bulk of the investment. Anolo, Blue* Peter and Lady Anstruther were prominent at the start with Blue Peter taking up the running at the five furlongs. The order into the straight was Blue Peter, Lady Anstruther, No Response and Gold Collector and in the run to the judge, Lady Anstruther won from Blue Peter by a length with Anola three lengths away and No Response fourth.

Of the eleven runners in the Waverley Cup, backers showed a preference for Yoma over Euphonium and £lOl separated them. Glengariff was< the early leader from Yoma, Star Area, Novar, Kilia, Alaric and Shining Armour but at the half-mile Alaric was making play from Shining Armour, Sunshort, Yoma and Captain Gazeley. Into the straight the order was Alaric, Sunshot, Crossfire, Shining Armour, Yoma, Novar and Euphonium, Star Area last. At the distance Alaric was in charge when Euphonium and Novar appeared on the scene, the latter getting up in the last few strides to win from Euphonium by a neck with Alaric a length away third. Glengariff was fourth and Shining Armour, Kilia, Sunshot, Crossfire and Yoma next to finish.

Bank Note was again entrusted with big money in the Flying Hack Handicap, but again he let his supporters down. Royal Elm, Bank Note, Grand Lupin, Pop Off, Tip Tree and Lucernal was the order from the barrier and at the half-mile Grand Lupin was in charge, leading to the straight from Flying Shot, Bank Note, Tip Tree, Bent Royal Elm and Pop Off. Over the final bit Pop Off did best, beating Tip Tree by half a length with Royal Elm a length away third. Grand Lupin Was fourth and Bank Note fifth.

Monoghan, a first day’s winner, was entrusted with the bulk of the investments in the Moumahaki Hack Handicap and drawing the rails the Bisogne gelding led from start to finish, defeating Bisox by half a length. Closefire was five lengths away with Subjection and Empire Camp next. A dozen came out for the Jackson Hack Handicap, Erin Go Bragh being made favourite. When they had gone a furlong the order was Argue, Erin Go Bragh, Quillfire, Sky Pilot and White Ringlet and there was no Change to the straight. A great finish resulted in Quillfire, Argue and Sky Pilot going over the line almost on terms, the first two dead-heating, with Sky Pilot a neck away and a length in front of Molto and White Ringlet. Quillfire paid a false price. OAMARU TROTTING CLUB. A SUCCESSFUL SPRING MEETING. BING BOY WINS OAMARU CUP. INCREASED TOTALISATOR RETURNS. (Per United Press Association.) Oamaru, October 25. VICTORIAN TURF NEWS. LIMERICK’S FOOT GIVING TROUBLE. MELBOURNE CUP HORSEMEN. THE COX PLATE RACE. WHY LIMERICK SWERVED. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Rec. 8.50 p.m.) Melbourne, October 25. Limerick’s injured foot is still giving trouble. He was absent from Flemington to-day. Mr Otway Falkiner has purchased the Adelaide two-year-old colt Ragazzo, by Seremond (imp.)—Baiabina, Jor £3OOO. N. Percival rides Naos in the Melbourne Cup, A. Fullarton, Beedos, and R. Medhurst, Longworthy. The scratchings for the Melbourne Cup include—Epilogue, Cyden, Affirm, Valorem, Fuji San, and Accarak. There was a loud and prolonged outcry raised during the running of the Cox Plate on Saturday when Limerick was suddenly knocked back several lengths. At the subsequent inquiry T. Green, rider of Limerick, stated that his mount went to the front at the start although the jockey did his best to check him. Going along the back stretch Metellus ran up to him and was just a little ahead when Limerick swerved out and struck Metellus. Limerick, being the lighter of the two horses, came off worst and fell back. Heroic had been three lengths behind the pair and H. Cairns dashed him (Heroic) out of Limerick’s way and was soon in front with the race weft won. Green attributed Limerick’s swinging out to the fact that the horse had been racing jn Sydney where they race in the opposite direction to Victorian tracks. The stewards decided to take no action.—A. and N.Z.
