TECHNICAL COLLEGE

ANNUAL SPORTS. SIX RECORDS BROKEN. The Southland Technical College held its annual athletic sports on Rugby Park yesterday in glorious weather. Efficient organisation and untiring zeal on the part of the staff and the excellent behaviour of the pupils made the day pass without a hitch and without the irritating delays so often experienced at sports meetings. One matter for regret is that the parents do not take more interest in their children’s doings. There were many exciting finishes yesterday and some highly creditable performances, yet it was a mere handful of parents that assembled to see their children perform. The track was in good order except for occasional unevenness in surface. There was a fairly stiff breeze blowing, and this made itself felt to competitors in the distance events. Otherwise conditions were ideal.

It was a day for record breaking, and no fewer than six fresh records were established. The winner of the senior championship, G. Henderson, was responsible for upsetting the existing times for the sprints. With slight assistance from the wind he ran the 100 yards in the good time of 10 4-ssecs. He also did the 220 in 25 seconds on a straight course, and the 440 in 57 2-ssecs. All of these were good performances, and if Henderson .can improve his style, particularly his striding, he should be heard of in the future, particularly as he is only in his sixteenth year. Grant and Hamilton jumped 4ft breaking the previous record by 11 inches; Walsh ran the half-mile in 2min 19 3-ssecs, clipping 4 l-ssecs off the record; while Calder lowered the junior 440 record by 2-ssecs. The senior championship went to G. Henderson, who scored 19 points. Walsh was second with 11 points, Hamilton third with 10 points, and Craig fourth with 9" points. There was keen competition for the junior championship which was won by J. Officer with 17 points; Calder was a point less, second; and Hodgkinson third with 13 points. While the boys were fighting out their finishes, the girls were no less keenly contesting their various races, and although the handicappers appeared to be rather severe on the back markers, there were plenty of thrilling races. The boys crowned their day by defeating the staff in a tug-of-war, the latter feeling the loss of one of their most strenuous pullers. The results of the various events were as follows: BOYS’ EVENTS. 100 Yards Senior Championship (record 11 2-ssecs).—G. L. Henderson, 1; J. Walsh 2; D. Craig 3. Time 11 l-ssec (record.)
