SPORTING

NOTES BY SIR MODRED. The locally-owned mare, Maytime, has foaled a filly to Tractor and visits the English sire again this season. Apache notched his first success on Thursday evening at Wingatui since he scored in the final race each day of the S-K.Cs. Autumn fixture in March last. In the Electric Handicap at the -D.J.C. Spring meeting on Thursday Rosenor got into trouble hy galloping on the heels of horses in front of him and broke down. The English horse has been a great disappointment during his turf carter. Several breeders spoken to during the currency of the Dunedin J.Cs. meeting this week stated that they held good opinions of Last Dan as a prospective sire. The son of Spearmint has furnished well since he left the post for the paddock. If two-year-olds are to be trained to good purpose in Southland in the spring Riverton appears to be the place to command success, with its beaches, hill paths, country’ roadways and dry tracks on the R.KCs. racecourse. Well-grown, furnished and with speed to burn, Some Rose was a well-canvassed advertisement for her sire, Some Boy H. after she won the McLean Stakes at Wingatui on 'lTiumday. So far very few of this horse’s progeny have raced, but, so far, all have won some money either as winners or placegetters, and there could not have been more than seven or eight raced. They have won races in New Zealand and Australia. Warhaven had a bad time of it when competing in the Electric Handicap at Wingatui on Thursday. In negotiating the far turn he was the outside horse of four or five in a bunch when some jumble took place near the rails, the result being that bumping was the order of the day, Rosenor being the chief suffenj. The English horse dropj’ed back and galloped on the heels of those in front and was injured past the breaking-down [x>int, while Warhaven was badly galloped on. J. A. Row Land’s pupil was cut about the hocks and lower down tnd half of one of his plates was carried away. After the race Rowlands had to treat the Kilbroney gelding for six or seven cuts, an unlucky happening, as it was his first race since leaving home for a trip embracing the Oam aru J.C. fixture. Shortly ■fter the mix-up referred to Rosenor very nmrly fell and it was probably at this juncture when the real trouble occurred to the English horee. It is needless to say that Messrs F. Trail and W. McKay (trainer), partners in Some Rose, were proud of the victory recorded by their brilliant filly in the McLean Stakes, of £750, on Thursday. It is the first time a Southland-bred two-year-old has won a standard classic event and this gave Mr Trail, in particular, great, pleasure, and rightly so, while his partner had every n*ason to be more than satisfied with the outcome of his labours as a mentor. Thus the Some Boy 11. filly was sired, bred, reared, owned and trained from Southland, while her rider (N.C. Dwyer) was also born and educated as a horseman in the home province—the performance all round was a good advertisement for a district where it has been claimed successful racehorses cannot be raised and raced. It has been contended that Wharncliffe was kept too far away from his field in the Spring Hurdle Handicap at Wingatui on Thursday, but the gelding and his light rider (E. Shaw) had a very stiff task in front of them by the way. In the first place, the youthful horseman had to put up ov«r three stone of dead weight and then AVh.irncliffe had to lump 11.9 in decidedly holding going, with the leaders setting a very strong pace throughout. All things considered, it was a good performance on the part of Mr Lewis’s Thurnham hurdler. It was all very well for interested lookerson to comnlain, but Captain Sarto, Bachelor Gay and Happy Days and then Coastguard and Bonomel did not let the grass grow under their feet in the holding going. The Southland-bred, but Mosgiel-owned Coastguard, by the way, had been galloping well across the flat on the tracks prior to the meeting and when he stepped out and jumped his fences well in the race it can be imagined he set. up serious opposition to his opponents. Bachelor Gay was going when he just tipped his rider off at the second last, fence, but Coastguard ran strongly enough to suggest that he would l ave defeated the Gay Lad gelding on the day. George Fielding turned the winner out in good shape. Two important races at Wingatfii on TTinrsday were won by mares who have the reputation of racing well in front when not seriously challenged on terms by opponents. Rivalry led off by leading most of the way in the Mosgiei Handicap and never being really caught by Full Swing, who attended her home, while Dancing Days hit the front in the first few strides of the Electric Handicap and was never afterwards headed. She usually fails about the distance when tackled in her races, but on this occasion she kept clear to the end and won a nice race for her owner-trainer, Mr Theo. Russell, who claims as his first lieutenant the ex-Southland horseman, J. McChesney. Apart from Dancing Days, Mr Russell has only two other horses in work, the pair being very promising youngsters by Archery and Solferino respectively, one of the number being from the dam of Sun Up and the other ranking as a descendant of Miss Camouflage. A Dunedin owner was anxious to secure the Solferino youngster recently, but Mr Russell could not be tempted to part with his budding racehorse. That, good mare, Set Sail, ran a very fine race in the Electric Handicap at Wingatui on Thursday. The daughter of Solferino has not been up very long, but she stuck to her task throughout in sticky going and could have been closer to Dancing Days and Comic Song at the finish had her jockey (A. S. Fll's' knocked her about when pursuit was hopeless. She was returning a srreat price to win or run-up, and had she been able to reach th" leaders a nice little win from legal wagering channels would have rewarded some connections of the stable. Comic Song also did well in gaining second berth and the race will probablj’ do him good. He carried 8.4 shirdilv. but the track was against him and the time, Imin 16 l-ssecs. was very good under the circumstances. After getting away badly. Corn Money and Paper Boy ran well in the same race, and it has to he stated in com noction with Corn Rigs that he appears to be an ancient who has come back to a certain extent in finishing close up in fourth place. Many of the southern admirers may have been disappointed when Full Swing was defeated by Rivalry in the Mosgiei Handicap at the D.J.C. fixture, but they need not cry over spilt milk, as the Nassau mare i eally put up a good performance to put the winner to the test over the final halffurlong and she might actually have won had she b**en able to get fairly on terms with Sir G. Clifford’s well-trained and goodlooking daughter of Antagonist—Equijxment. Full Swing was staying on well at the end and the race will not do her any harm as she is not yet at her best, but always improving in view of more serious engagements ahead next month. The five-year-old Western district mare, Spearmaid, won the Trial Stakes at Wingatui on Thursday like a promising stayer, as she came from behind and worried down the opposition to head off Polly Flinders, who had teen one of the leaders throughout. Now a five-year-old, Spearmaid, who, by rhe way, was produced in excellent form by A. McKay, of Riverton, looks like making a very fair miler, and the fact that she should promise to stay on is not surprising, as she was got by Greyspear, imp. (son of Spearmint), from Mnndnah, by ''iTtian (imp.). The runner-up, Polly Flinders, is a three-year-old filly by Pa peg Money from a mare by Solferino—Stepk a,

by Stepniak, owned by the Wingatui mentor, S. G. Ware, and she may fracture her maiden status in the near future. Several observant onlookers took a fancy to the three-year-old gelding, Royal Saxon, who occupied third berth in the Trial Stakes after being up with the leader, Polly Flinders, to the finish. Ho is a son of imported Saxby from Heath Lass, one of the late Hr J. C. N. Grigg’s good mares, and more may b® heard of him in future provided he trains on. It is stated that he was displaying symptoms of soreness early in the season and up to a week ago, but that ho has been galloped nearly sound again by his mentor, R, McDonald. 'Hie leading hacks engaged in the Tiaoma Handicap at Wingatui on Thursday galloped fast on the journey and recorded a gait only three-fifths of a second outside the time put up in the open sprint Electric t Handicap. It caused some surprise when Arrowmir, Pink Terrace and Black Duke reached the judge, with the former making Imin 16 4-5 secs, but the trio moved speedily and did their work really well. The goldfields representative, Arrowmir, by Arrowsmith—Vladimir mare, has hitherto borne the reputation of being a non-stayer, but he ran on well on Thursday and his trainer, R. McDonald, may yet develop him into a useful [xjrformcr as he is only a four-year-old. For a three-year-old filly, Pink Terrace did well under 8.10 and this daughter of Tractor will probably win in her turn before the season h much further advanced. Black Duke also ran a very fine race and when be stops out at the end of the current racing year or next season he may be classed as ® very useful handicap performer. WELLINGTON RACING CLUB. Disapproval of tours of lady swimmers was expressed at a meeting of the Otago Centre of the Swimming Association when the question of the visit of the Australian champions was being considered, objections being on the grounds that women swimmers did not draw the public. After discussion it was decided to agree to the appearance of the Australian ladies at Dunedin on January 12, for which £25 has to be guaranteed. TOUR OF AUSTRALIAN LADIES. MIXED FEELING IN AUCKLAND. Auckland, October 15. The proposed tour of New Zealand by the Australian lady swimmers, Claire Caldwell and Ettie Robertson was discussed by the Auckland Swimming Centre. Objection was raised on the grounds of finance and the undue length of the tour. Mr L. Brighton said the £lOO which the Council estimated would be lost would veiy likely come from the Olympic fund. He was of opinion that the money should be kept to use in sending New Zealand swimmers abroad. Mr. J. Enwright complained that no encouragement was being given to New Zealand swimmers. He did not think the tour should be undertaken when their own swimmers were unable to get away and win more than the Dominion Championships. Several motions and amendments were discussed and the following was eventually curried: “That Auckland approve of the tour if it is curtailed, as it is thought the itinerary is too ambitious. Auckland will accept one appearance with a guarantee of £25.”

The annual report of the New Zealand Cricket Council shows a credit balance of £BB6, and expresses gratification at the successful tour of Australia last season, particularly as showing critics that New Zealand should be able to forge ahead as one of the cricket countries of the Empire.
