NEW ZEALAND HOUSE

MINOR ALTERATIONS. MORE PUBLICITY FACILITIES. London, August. 28. A noteworthy change for the comfort and convenience of New Zealand visitors has been made by the new High Commissioner, Sir James Parr. Hitherto, the New Zealand papers, of each of which there has only been one copy available, have hung on the walls of a small annexe of the library, and this* room—which is also uced as a writing room—has now become so popular that at times as many as a dozen people are crowded around the tingle table reading the latest New Zealand news. This provision was probably ample 10 years ago, but with the increase in the number of visitors from the Dominion each year, and with the greater English interest in New Zealand affairs, it is now quite inadequate. The High Commissioner here therefore decided to convert half of the entrance-hall of the present building in the Strand—which has been used as a sort of small “museum”—into a newspaper read-ing-room. It is being fitted up with reading desks and suitable tables. The room is immediately on the visitors’ righthand as they enter the building, and it is particularly accessible and convenient. lhe High Commissioner is also inquiring into the matter of permitting a bookstall to be installed in the hall for the sale .of New Zealand books and literature. It is rather an anomaly that at present the nearest place to New Zealand House at which literature dealing with New Zealand can be procured is at the bookstall in Australia House. Sir Janies Parr proposes to alter this if suitable arrangements can be made. There is to guide him the very large sale of New Zealand books that was effected at the bookstall in New Zealand Pavilion at the Empire Exhibition. A further alteration is adequate office provision on the same floor for the Publicity Department, which hitherto was located in a small room at the top of the building. The work of this department can undoubtedly be more effectively carried on under these new conditions.
