ALLEGED THEFT
EX-OFFICER CHARGED. COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, September 27. Patrick Shields, an ex-Indian Army officer was charged at the Police Court with the theft of a typewriter valued at £l7, from a guest at an hotel. The manager of the typewriting agency gave evidence that on August 31 accused offered to sell him the typewriter for £B. Witness recognised it as a machine reported through the police as missing. He made an excuse and asked Hargreaves to call later. Accused returned in five minutes and asked for the typewriter. Witness refused to- let* it' go. Aoefised stated to the police that he bought the typewriter from a man named Clarkson for £lB, but the man could not be located. Accused pleaded not guilty and was committed for trial. Bail was allowed in £lOO.
