EPIDEMIC DISEASES

ALMOST DISAPPEARED. MAN LINTS LONGER. London, September 2. The Chief Medical Officer of the Ministry of Health makes a striking declaration on national health in his annual report. Looking back over fifty years he states it is found that grave epidemic diseases have almost disappeared. Man lives longer and childhood is healthier. On the other hand he states that cancer has gained ground, tuberculosis is too prevalent, and pneumonia and influenza remain undefeated. Sickness resulted in immense loss in national output, amounting last year to twenty-five millions of weeks, or practically one year’s loss of work by nearly half a million persons.—A. & N.Z.
