W.E.A. CLASS. (From Our Correspondent.) The weekly meeting of the W.E.A. Class was fairly well attended, Mr Alderson presiding. Mr S. G. August delivered an address on Shakespeare’s work, making his remarks under four headings, viz., sonnets, lyrics, plays and finally the poetic character of his plays. Each phase of his work was exemplified by selected readings. Mr August had with him an interesting collection of photogravures of celebrated Shakespearean authorities and exponents. It was decided to ask Mr L. O. Sullivan, 8.A., to lecture next week on the “Industrial Revolution in England.” ST. LAWRENCE SOCIETY. Bro. D. Daly presided over the fortnightly meeting of the St. Lawrence branch of the H.A.C.8.5., there' being a good attendance. The quarterly balance-sheet was submitted and discussed and adopted. Bro. R. Monaghan was appointed a trustee of the society. Arrangements were made for a card match with the Druids at next meeting. FOOTBALL DANCE. The annual dance of the Mataura Football Club was attended by some 60 couples. The attendance included visitors from other Eastern District dubs. The floor was in good trim and music was provided by Miss E. Duncan (piano), and Messrs F. Kroning (violin), J. Henry (clarionet), while Mr E. Cronin played the effects. The programme was capably controlled by Messrs L. McPhee and N. McLeod. Supper extras were played by Messrs Ferguson and Lewis. KITCHEN PARTY. On the occasion of her approaching marriage a large number of friends congregated in Mr Coombes’ bam in honour of his daughter, Miss L. Coombes, the other night. The barn was decorated for the occasion and the evening was pleasantly spent in dancing interspersed with musical items. The music for the dancing was supplied by Mesdames Piercy, Haigh, Clearwater, Miss O. Leitch, and Mr A. Robertson. During the evening items were contributed as follows: —Duet, Misses Leitch and Ingram; solos, Messrs A. Jones, Swan and Mrs F. S. Gray,, and pipe selections by Messrs I Clearwater and A. Robertson. At a suitable interval in the proceedings, Mr J. Haigh asked Miss Coombes to accept a fine array of useful articles, and extended the best wishes of all present for her future happiness. Mr C. Peck suitably replied on behalf of the recipient.
