RECORD SEASON

DAIRY PRODUCE RETURNS ' SHIPMENTS FROM SOUTHLAND NOTABLE INCREASE IN CHEESE. The secretary of the Southland Cool Stores Ltd., Mr W. D. Palmer, reports that the dairying season in Southland has just closed, the last of the dairy produce having been received into cool stores during the past week. The season completed has been a record one for the province, and although a substantial Dominion shortage in the quantity of both butter and cheese manufactured during the past year is reported, it is gratifying to find that the Southland figures show a big increase. This splendid return is chiefly due to the long mild season with sufficient moisture to produce an abundance of green feed through the summer and into mid-winter. The returns for cheese received into cool stores have mounted from 120,331 crates to 141,929 crates, an increase of 21,598 crates, equalling approximately 1,542 tons. Butter returns show a decrease of 225 tons, chiefly owing to the good prices ruling for cheese during the season, and to the Gore district butter being shipped through Dunedin. The table below shows to what extent excellent returns were established right into the winter months.
