“A PALPABLE HIT.”
To the Editor. Sir, —Would you kindly peripit me to show that the report of the meeting of the Southland Presbytery which appeared in your issue of the 7th instant, conveys in some particulars quite an erroneous impression.
In connection with the call from the Wallacetown congregation I am reported as saying that as the charge had been vacant for two months it was felt that it was about time something should be done. I do not know who was responsible for this statement, sir, but certainly, it was not made on the floor of the Presbytery either by myself or by the commissioners present. As the congregation concerned has been anything but dilatory in effecting a settlement, I feel it my duty to correct this misstatement.
Recently, a gentleman closely connected with a certain paper well-known in Southland gave an instructive address on “truth” and “art.” An excellent subject for a pressman. lam wondering if, when reporting the doings of the Presbytery, the reporters are so caught away with a spirit of idealism, that they cannot help oft times sacrificing “truth” lor “art” in their reports. However, I think you will admit that on occasions it is even necessary for reports to be more “truthful” than “artful.” I think, sir, that a little more attention might well be given to the reports of the Presbytery meetings.—l am, etc., MURRAY A. GOW. Waianiwa, 14/7/26.
