BUSH NEAR TUATAPERE.

To the Editor. Sir, —Kindly allow me space in your valuable paper to draw your attention to a new body just formed, which styles itself The Tuatapere Town Planning and Progressive League: Mr Charlton chairman and president; Peter Hamilton and G. McLeod vice-presidents. Now, Mr Editor, I notice the chairman of this body said it was formed principally to oppose the action of the Land Board in cutting up a small piece of land here for workers’ sections, about 14 acres apiece, which they say is scenic bush and should be preserved. Did you ever hear of such rot ? I will try and endeavour to describe this piece of bush to you, and then you can come to your own idea whether it is scenic or not. It fa<ys two roads about 20 chains on the half mile road and about 50 on the Clifden road. All the frontage on the half mile road is cut into sections five chains deep xhd felled and in grass. On the corner of the Clifden road it is cut into sections also for 12 chains along it and held for, future sale. Now the balance of this bxjsh along the Clifden road has been all exit 1 out by post splitters, and the fire has burnt out patches in it, some of them 'about four chains deep. This is the pi'/ce of bush they would set aside for scexy.c purposes. This piece of bush, which, is a regular eye-sore, would look much, better if it was in grass and six workers’ homes upon it. It is a strange thing tA me that Mr Charlton and Mr Hamilton should oppose such a thing. Did either of them consider the scenic part of Tu/tapere w’hen they cut out along the rr/ad better pieces of bush than this? I sincerely hope the Land Board will go on with its good work and open this piece of land, and see that only a worker gets one section; no speculators, no one who has over five acres of land, and give him two years to have it in grass, and then help him to put up a cottage for himself. He can then keep a few r cows, and when a little hard time comes along he won’t feel it. Hoping you will assist the worker all you can.—l am, etc., HARD WORKER.*
