HOUSING POLICY
GOVERNMENT CRITICISED. SUGGESTED ALTERATION OF POLICY. (From Our Special Reporter). Wellington, June 18. The Government’s housing policy was criticised in the House to-day by Mr J. R. Hamilton (Awarua), who said that he thought the time had come to allow those getting loans under the State Advances Act to use the loans for buying as well as building houses. Mr Hamilton gave notice of his intention to ask the Minister of Finance whether he would take into consideration an alteration of the policy so as to allow those applying for loans under the State Advances Act to do so for the purpose of buying a house as well as building. Mr Hamilton said that when the policy of granting loans for the purpose of building houses only was adopted there was a serious shortage of houses throughout New Zealand in most towns and districts. This shortage was overcome. A continuation of the present policy was likely to do more harm than good. There was a sufficient supply of houses which could be bought for much than it would cost to build a new one..
