MINE FLOODED

150 MEN IDLE. WATER STILL RISING. (Per United Press Association.) Whangarei, June 17. The flood in the Hikurangi Coal Company’s mine, due to the abnormal rainfall a fortnight ago, has assumed serious proportions. The only available pump is now out of action and bailing operations were stopped owing to a mishap to the cage which lowered tanks. The water is rising rapidly causing a complete cessation of work and 150 employees are idle. Two powerful pumps capable of dealing effectively with the water are on order but the date of their arrival is uncertain.
