WOOL TRADE
THE EUROPEAN MARKET. London, Feb. 24. Mr J. P. H. Mertens, Honorary Commercial Representative, at Antwerp, for the Dominion of New Zealand, says that the wool market at that port has been quiet latterly, but that good competition may be expected at the next public sale, which will comprise 2900 bales River Plate and 3000 bales sundries and colonial wools. In Verviers the worsted spinners and manufacturers keep busy, whereas clothing wools are suffering from unsatisfactory financial conditions in Central Europe, upon which outlets Verviers is largely dependent. News from Roubaix-Tourcoing is to the effect that although the French home trade is still hampered by exchange and political uncertainties, and notwithstanding that the production of the tops has been on a very iarge scale, the increase in stocks at combers is only 1,714,0001 b. A steady flow of business in Italy is maintained under fairly satisfactory conditions. Unemployment is rife in Germany, and the financial situation is distinctly bad with an undue proportion of commercial failures and a diminished consumption. With the exception of the Central European and adjoining countries, consumption is satisfactory, but although the prices of wool are now on a sound demand and profitable basis, the best that can be said is that merinos are not likely to decline further, whereas crossbreds, being less in demand, are still somewhat uncertain.— Press Correspondent.
