MASONIC INSTITUTE

OPENING AT NELSON. (Per United Press Association.) Nelson, April 6. The Kirkpatrick Masonic Institute (formerly the residence of the late S. Kirkpatrick) was officially opened by Bro. R. W. Jesse Steer, District Grand Master of Westland and Nelson, chairman of »the board of governors, in the presence of a large and representative attendance of the Masonic fraternity. Mr Steer explained that the home was, by the terms expressed in the will of the late esteemed brother, Samuel Kirkpatrick, to be founded on similar lines to the Royal Masonic Institute for girls in England. He said: “The Masonic Society is not a friendly society, benevolent or charitable institution, but it unfortunately happens through circumstances over which we have no control that sickness, long illness and death leaves children fatherless in more or less precarious and destitute circumstances. Brother Kirkpatrick, realising this and with the liberal hospitality which has characterised his actions to those dependent upon him and those in his employ, has left the residue of his estate, approximately £50,000, together with this beautiful home with its pleasant surroundings, for the housing and education of girls left in this unfortunate position.”
