JUVENILE CRIME

THE AMERICAN SCARE. STATEMENT BY CHILDREN’S BUREAU. (Rec. 9.25 p.m.) Washington, April 5. Challenging the contention that there are any real grounds for the youthful crime wave scare, the United States Federal Children’s Bureau has issued a statement that the aavilable figures indicate that there has been a reduction rather than an increase of juvenile delinquency rates in the past decade. The Bureau declared that there was no significant increase on account of the number of children committed to gaol for grave offenses such as homicide, robbery and burglary between 1910 and 1923 and recommended a sane and thoughtful consideration of this problem rather than newspaper headlines. Fourteen cities, including New York, Boston, Chicago, New Orleans, Richmond, St. Louis, Seattle and Washington provided statistics showing decreased delinquency in nine. Increased rates were found only in four, namely, Detroit, Minneapolis, Philadelphia and Seattle. Immediate post-war years showed slight increases.—A. and N.Z.
