MUNICIPAL AFFAIRS

SOUTH INVERCARGILL BOROUGH. MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the South Invercargill Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last evening. There were present, the Mayor (Mr W. McChesney) and Councillors R. Foster, J. R. Sutton, J. T. Barty, D. Wilson, J. Forrester, W. Bridges, M. Peace, F. Holloway and W. Hewitt and the town clerk (Mr F. Smith). A circular letter was received from the secretary of the Sports Protection league, asking the council to accord support to legislation to introduce “summer time.” It was resolved, on the motion of Councillor Barty, to support the proposal. The chairman of the District Highways Council (Mr W. G. Pearce) wrote stating that his attention had been drawn to an article in the Southland Times on February 23, relative to the reconstruction of the Bluff Roed, in which the Mayor was credited with a statement that the Main Highways Board would pay 50 per cent, of the cost of reconstruction. This was not in accordance with the policy of the board, which would make no contribution towards reconstruction work.—The Mayor said that the board’s policy was one of the anomalies liable to occur in new legislation. He thought that they should approach the board to ask for its support in having the legislation in this respect changed. He thought that Mr Pearce should be thanked for his thoughtful action in informing the council of the position. It was resolved, on the motion of Councillor Sutton, to write to the Highways Board drawing the attention of members to the matter. W. McDowell, Dipton street, wrote stating that the road leading to his house from Elies Road was in a bad state, and had been for some months.—lt was decided to instruct the borough foreman to spread five trucks of river gravel on the street in question. J. S. Dick, secretary of the Southland League, wrote stating that at the last meeting of the League reference was made to the lack of co-ordination between the boroughs of Invercargill and South Invercargill and the Southland County Council in regard to the natural development of the town and suggesting that a conference of these bodies be held.—Councillors ernrwed the opinion that the move The letter was received.
