SAWMILL ACCIDENT

TRAGEDY AT TAHAKOPA. While working at the Lauriston mill at Tahakopa, in the Catlins River district, on Friday, Charles Kirkland, a sawmill hand, received injuries which later resulted in his death. From details received in Invercargill it appears that a log rolled on the unfortunate man. He was aged 36 and leaves a widow and four children. Reference was made to the accident at a meeting of members of the Sawmill Workers’ Union, of which deceased was a member, on Saturday, a motion of sympathy being placed on record with his relatives and friends. The secretary (Mr T. O’Byrne) stated that over 20 years ago deceased lost an arm while working in the bush at Moffett and Company’s sawmill at Waikawa.
