WALLACE HOSPITAL

MEETING OF BOARD. (From Our Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Wallace Hospital Board was held on Thursday. There were present Mr S. Fowle (chairman), Miss Hunt, Messrs J. Horrell, F. J. Linscott, T. A. Buckingham, J. Johnston and F. J. Dyer. The Southland Hospital Board wrote stating that a patient from Wallace was receiving treatment in the institution. The secretary stated that since last meeting a patient had been discharged, and there was only one remaining there.—Received. The Otago Hospital Board wrote stating that two Wallace patients who were in the Dunedin institution had been discharged. One patient’s account was £l5, and another owed £3, £l2 having been paid. —Received.

The secretary stated that since last meeting relief had been supplied to two families to keep them going till the meeting of the board. One was in the Otautau district and the other in the Western district.— The action of the secretary was approved, and it was resolved that the chairman and the secretary make further inquiries.

A married woman who had been assisted by the board wrote stating that as she was removing from the district she would not require further assistance. —Received. Dr Kingston, Queenstown, wrote regarding a Wallace patient who had been visiting Queenstown, and who wished to enter the Waipiata Sanatorium. —Received. Mr W. S. Hunter, solicitor, wrote with regard to an estate which was being wound up. If the board could reduce the amount owing, £66 17/3, he was in hopes of forwarding a certain sum.—Mr Johnston said the property comprised a small section, which would not realise much.—Left in the hands of the chairman and secretary with power to act.

The Director-General of Health, Wellington, wrote informing the board that Dr McEachern, an American expert on hospital matters, was visiting New Zealand. —The secretary said he and the chairman had met the doctor at the conference recently held at Dunedin. Mr Duncan Matheson, Orawia, forwarded 10/6, proceeds of an entertainment.—On the motion of the chairman it was decided to write and thank the donor. The South Otago Hospital Board wrote stating that they were strongly of the opinion that the capital expenditure at the Waipiata Sanatorium should now cease until time has proved the success of the experiment.—Mr Korrell, the board’s representative on the committee, defended the institution at Waipiata. He considered the home was doing an immense amount of good. He also gave a list showing the amount of expenditure.—Some discussion followed, and Mr Horrell eventually moved that the letter be received, and as the treatment of the patients at the Waipiata Sanatorium during the past three years has been so successful, the board is of the opinion that the Waipiata committee are quite justified in the capital expenditure.— The motion was carried.

Mr Buckingham said he thought the time had arrived when something should be done to keep incurable cases isolated, and the Department should be asked to act. They should also approach other boards, asking for their co-operation in the matter. He moved accordingly.—Carried. DOCTOR’S REPORT. Patients remaining from previous month: males 21, females 5 —26; admitted during the month: males 19, females 9—28; total treated: males 40, females 14—54; discharged during the month: males 18, females 9—27; deaths: 1 female. In at present: males 15, females 4—19. Old men 7. DONATIONS. Old linen and books from Mrs Brookes; flowers from various friends. GENERAL. The secretary reported that he and the chairman had visited the Hospital Boards Conference at Dunedin as delegates from the Wallace board, and he read a report of the proceedings.—Adopted. It was resolved that the Riverton Racing Club be granted the use of the ambulance for the Easter races at £2 per day. The secretary reported that some repairs were necessary at the hospital.—Members to inspect.

Accounts amounting to £602 were passed for payment.
