HENLEY FOUR-OARED MILE. NEW ZEALAND CREW JUST BEATEN. A GREAT RACE. MELBOURNE, October 25. (Received October 25, 5.5 p.m.) The Henley four-oared mile race was held in perfect weather. There was a record attendance. In the first heat Hamilton (New Zealand) beat Melbourne by a length and a half, Banks of Victoria, being third. Hamilton started well and soon had a few feet lead. Although the stroke, Sandos, lost his slide immediately after the start, Hamilton maintained their lead throughout, winning easily, the time being smin 33secs. In the semi-final Hamilton drew the north side. West Australia got away first, leading by six feet at the quarter mile. Hamilton sprinted and caught West Australia, gaining a two feet lead at the three-quarter distance. Both crews finished strongly, West Australia winning in a thrilling finish by two feet. The spectators gave a great ovation to the crews some thinking it a dead heat. The stroke, Sandos, said the crew pulled well, but met their equals and were just beaten on the post after a great race. The time was smin 40secs. West Australia won the final from Rockhampton by a length and a-half.
