To-day (Labour Day) is being observed as a close holiday on the waterfront. The Benicia arrived at Dunedin on Friday morning from Sydney. She is expected at Bluff early this week. The Willaston which has been tied up at Bluff owing to the strike, is expected to leave to-day for New Plymouth, Westport and San Francisco. The Leitrim will not leave Dunedin till to-morrow, owing to trouble with the crew. She is expected to arrive here on Wednesday. The Wanaka left Lyttelton at 8.30 p.m. on Friday for Timaru, Oamaru and Dunedin. She is due at the latter port tomorrow, and after discharging a quantity of cargo there will proceed to Bluff, where she is expected to arrive on Wednesday. The Calm arrived at Dunedin on Friday morning from Bluff, and sailed the same day for Timaru and Lyttelton to complete loading for Wellington and Wanganui. 'Hie Port Hacking left Lyttelton at 1 p.m. on Saturday for Dunedin. She is due at Bluff on Wednesday. The Kakapo is scheduled to sail from Dunedin on Wednesday for Timaru to complete loading for Westport and Greymouth. The Waikouaiti is to leave Sydney tomorrow with general merchandise for discharge at Bluff, Dunedin, Lyttelton and Timaru. The Cumberland was to leave Liverpool on Saturday for northern ports and Dunedin. She is due at Auckland about December 1. The Federal Line steamer Devon is due at Dunedin on Wednesday next from Lyttelton to discharge the remainder of her Liverpool cargo. , Th. e .Union Company’s new cargo steamer Kartigi, after being cleaned and painted in dry dock, left Port Chalmers on Friday afternoon for Westport direct. The New Zealand Shipping Company advises that the Turakina, which was on fire at Wellington on October 16, was expected to sail for Napier on Saturday, where she completes loading and sails early in November for London, via Panama. The Wann an a sailed from Auckland last Tuesday morning for New York, Boston and London. The vessel is manned mainly by a volunteer crew.

The Shaw-Savill Company’s steamer Raranga was expected to leave Lyttelton on Friday to take in cargo at Timaru, Wellington and Auckland. She is to sail from Auckland on November 18 for London, via Monte .Video and Teneriffe.

The Dorset arrived in the Wanganui roadstead on Tuesday last from New Plymouth to load for West Coast ports of Great Britain. She next proceeds to Wellington, and is due at that port on Wednesday. The Tainui left Auckland on Wednesday last for loading at Opua, Lyttelton and Wellington. The vessel is due at Wellington on November 3, and is expected to clear that port on November 7 for London, via Panama. The New Zealand Shipping Company has received a wireless message from the Tekoa, ?n route from London, stating that the vessel expects to arrive at Port Chalmers at 6 p.m. on Monday. The ship has cargo for discharge at Port Chalmers, Lyttelton and Bluff. THE FERRY SERVICE. The Wahine, from Wellington, arrived at Lyttelton at 6.45 a.m. on Saturday, and passengers and mails connected with the 8.50 a.m. through express. THE BENICIA. The Benicia, which is due at Bluff shortly, is a well deck single-screw steamer with bridge and engine-room amidships. Her cargo is carried in five hatches and her carrying capacity is 8950 tons. Built this year by Messrs R. Duncan and Company at Port Glasgow, the Benicia is on her maiden voyage. Her owners are the Oriel Steam Ship Company (J. Edgar and Company), of Liverpool. Sailed (Sunday) : Wahine end John for Lyttelton; Athenic for Timaru; Agwipond (tanker) for San Luis (California); Turakina for Napier.
