ROWING

GENERAL NOTES 1 (By "Junius.”) The Invercargill club held a very successful opening last Saturday, the President, Mr R. N. Todd officiating. Several crews took the water, and since that time odd boats have been out. One of the fours is at present out of action but once this is remedied, more activities in the club’s affairs can be looked for. The Railway Club trial four crews have now been chosen and comprise the following T. Davidson (stroke), J. Lyons, (three), F. Davis (two), T. Carter (bow). H. Morton (stroke), J. Knight (three), W. McDonald (two) J. Jensen (bow). J. Buckingham (stroke), B. O’Toole, (three), W. Lines (two), O. Wale (bow). H. Mackay (stroke), J. R. Mackay, (three), C. Young (two), S. G. Sutherland (bow). S. O’Neill, (two), F. McLaughlin, (bow). H. Long (stroke), M. Sheehan (three), B. Gimblett (two), D. Hay (bow). F. Melvin (stroke), E. Sheehan (three), F. Bailey (two), L. Warburton, (bow). D. Pay (stroke), J. H. Sutherland, (three) H. Pay (two), F. McManus (bow). J. E. Pay (stroke), P. Hennessy (three), E. J. Colquhoun (two) M. Officer (bow). The Awarua club trial fours comprise the following:— A. Tall (stroke), J. Staunton (three), H. Obergard, (two), Denton (bow). J. Dawson (stroke), J. Spencer (three), O. Olsen (two), A. Brealey (bow). T. Ross (stroke), J. Flaus (three), W. Campbell (two), J. Burtenshaw (bow). C. Hunter (stroke), H. Samuelson, (three) C. Cleave (two), R. McKenzie (bow). C. Parry (stroke) Mclntyre (three) A. Morrison (two), Mortimer (bow). V. Conway (stroke), D. Conway (three), H. Johnstone (two), S. Goomes (bow). H. Tall (stroke), E. Spencer (three). H. Jamieson (two), Newall (bow). T. Finnerty (stroke), H. McKenzie (three), L. Barton, (two), Magniel (bow). W. Burtenshaw (stroke) J. Drake (three) E. Bigwood (two), Brown (bow). A. Burtenshaw (stroke), V. Campbell (three), Bagrie, (two), T. Fowler (bow). E. Budd (stroke), W. Philipson (three), G. Giles (two), G. Barton. The Awarua crews are now turning out regularly and everything is in good working order. The club races will be rowed in the next fortnight and the regatta crews will then be picked. A grievance that has been the cause of much trouble in the past at the leading regattas, has been the want of punctuality in carrying out the programmes as scheduled and timed. Another matter is that very often the programmes have been rearranged owing to competitors being unable to race at the time ordered as per draw. While fully appreciating the difficulties that have to be overcome if a race is due to start upstream, yet the Executive Committee should urge every club captain when entering Club crews for races to take all possible steps to ensure that the crews will be able to be at the stake boat at the required time. A serious endeavour on the part of captains and crews would do much to obviate many irritating delays and postponements, which, after all, only increase the difficulties of officials and other competitors.

The premiership of the West Australian Rowing Association has this season been won by the West Australia Club, with a total of 137 points. They won 50 per cent of the races held during the season. The runners-up were the Swan River Club. The Melbourne Henley is being held today, and it is expected that this year’s regatta will be even more successful than that of former years. In several instances improvements have been introduced, and as far as rowing is concerned the entries are well up to former standards. The maiden eights have a record entry and many of the clubs have had great difficulty in securing boats for their crews. Included In the Wellington Rowing Club’s trophies is one famous cup, the Young Cup. It was a condition that it should be won outright by the club which should win the four championships in two successive years. The first year it was competed for the Wellington Club put up a remarkable record of winning four championships in one day. What was more astonishing was that the next season the club again won the same championships., and consequently won the cup outright. The crew which created the record was Rose, Sullivan, Bridson, and McKay. It is understood that the Wellington Rowing Club is making a move to get the cup re-donated on its former conditions.
